VM Cable Vs BT Infinity

Im with VM and if you go on their forums it's riddled with people who cant game because of the ridiculous latency, me being one.

At the minute i cant switch as im stuck in contract for a few more months but even then BT arent in my area yet which may leave me no choice but to stay with them!

yeah i think thats the reason why so many people are with VM not by choice but because there area isn,t B.T Infinity anabled yet :) as i think more would be with B.T given the chance .

In short, Virgin's core network was built in the 90's to support a lot less of the current bandwidth demand with a lot less users.

BT's core 21CN network has been built in the past couple of years to last a very long time.

I think this is a key point BT have a much newer and modern network so you would expect it to be more robust and handle more users more efficiently than Virgin. Always much harder to upgrade a system than to build one from scratch.

Virgin paid to cancel my broadband contract, and halved the remaining bill for phone/TV, which was later waived after someone there end cocked up and sent me a bill for the full amount.

It's worth chasing their head office especially if you can get Infinity. The only thing I miss about Virgin is their sticky IP's, however with a bit of dyndns or no-ip config and the right router like I've done, it becomes less of an issue.

Fantastic advice from all, thank you very much, I appreciate it.

Theres a thread about it on moneysavingexpert.
Know what BT / Sky are offering and what you will be saving per month and call them up to cancel. I didn't even get that far before they offered me XL phone and 60MB for £30 a month, i was happy with that.

Thanks Showboat. So are you saying that if I go ahead with the cancellation, there maybe a chance I will get a call back? Do I have to call them?

Bit like a game of poker really, one calling others bluff or something to that effect!

But you're saying that I can cancel the "cancellation process" within 30 days?

I thought about swapping from VM 50Mbps cable to infinity. Called BT - HH3 arrived, install date assigned. That's about as good as it got, the eingeer didn't turn up and when I finally got to someone to complain about wasting a day off from work they still couldn't promise the engineer would arrive on the date they said.

I got passed from person to person, until I finally suggested they can stick the connection up their arse. Contract cancelled.

BT may have the best network, but their tech support, customer services and general attitude completely sucks.

Don't get me wrong, VM aren't brilliant but if you speak to someone in the UK they get stuff done. The off shore tech support is a bit pathetic mind.

I think a lot of British support and customer respect is bad ! Not just B.T its a sign of the times which is very sad :(

I would change to BT Infinity in a second if I could get it. I recently moved to VM from bethere adsl. Download speeds are great, but I cannot even stream a 480p video on youtube and I warp all over the place on quake live constantly getting vote kicked. Seriously, if the only thing you want to do is download from usenet VM are good, but oh man they suck so bad for everything else.

My exchange is apparently enabled for BT Infinity but it says I cannot get it, do BT have to do some further work in my area to allow me to get Infinity like digging up roads etc? Really annoying, because my mate who lives 5 mins walk from me is able to get it from June 2012, but putting my address in comes up with nothing.

I am actually in the process of cancelling VM and going back to my old 5mb ADSL connection with bethere.

BT customer service is ****

i had BT about a year or so ago it was going to be used as a secondary internet access but was getting so many issues such as slow speed, lots of drop outs, ect. it took them well over a month to find the issue.. they wanted me to continue paying full price while they find the issue then wait another month or so for them to sort it. in the end i left BT .......

i've had no really bad issues with VM since i joined virgin/ntl over 17years ago, the only afew slight issues i've had such as power levels/lost of connection, but that got sorted within 2days plus they didn't charge me for the internet for 2 weeks because of the issues i had....

have you looked on the open Reach website for when it will be available ? seems strange that your mate gets it and you don,t , mind you its about what cabinet your one i guess :) also have you rang B.T and asked for advice about when it is available ?

Doesn't say anything on the website about when it is due :( Going to give them a call in a bit, seems strange that I am surrounded by fibre enabled cabinets.
