I upgraded my speed to 20 meg on weds, and managed to haggle a free router out of them, its an Netgear WGR614V9.

The problem is that it has VM's own firmware on it, and it's outdated, so does anyone know how to flash it to the latest netgears own firmware as I have been told it can't be done as it's locked.

Any Idea's?

SJ.

I had one of these and tried to do the same. In the end I just left it as you can still access all of the config page. There is one way of doing it but it may break your router. Have a google.

Cheers, will see how it goes, looks nicer then my old sitecom one, why on earth do they lock the firmware I have no idea.
To stop people fiddling with them that don't know what they are doing. It also means all versions look the same, so if they are diagnosing something over the phone, they can guide people through it easily.

TBH the free router is fine. I've always used a wrt54gs w/tomato but I find the free one fine. Never screwed up once in the 6 months I've been using it.

i could be wrong but as soon as you cancel your virgin cable or broadband they'll also request it back? thats the sort of thing i've heard via cableforums.
