I swapped out my old Router/Modem combination for one of these last weekend to take advantage of the 30MB connection. I'm quite pleased with only having the one device but I've noticed a few quirks / limitations.


Firstly, it appears that some wireless devices keep dropping. In particular my sons XBOX which had no problems before. Sound familair?

Secondly, I controlled all wireless devices from my old WRTGl with Tomato firmware. The new device has MAC filtering but it doesn't toggle over midnight. I'd like to disable wireless access on a device-by-device basis retricting access to certian times but the VM hub won't allow me to disable between 8pm to 8am next moring.. the Tom firmware did.

My questions are

1. Does any one know how I can get round this?
2. Can the software by updated or replaced?
3. Is there any means I can activate some kind of access control other than from the hub itself.. It's becoming a full time job as a network administrator at home..

Did your old WRTGl get taken away?

I've had the super hub put in place and just had it DMZ all traffic to my previous router and pretty much turned off all features of the super hub.

If you can have another device plugged in, would this be an option?
 
Superhub has been anything but for me :(
Was very happy with my DIR-655 prior to upping to 30Mb with VM, and now stuck with the POC !
Main problems are : wireless is flaky (well documented eveywhere !), no DYNDNS (or similar) functionality, no QoS and somewhat limited in pretty much every other department.
As mentioned above, DMZ~ing to another router is often the best 'solution', but this does not work for me (seems the DIR-655 won't play this game - d'oh !).....
VM are in the early (and late !) stages of testing Bridge mode firmware, which will allow turning the hub into a straight-forward modem, essentially, allowing your router of choice to get back to doing what it can, and the hub cannot ! Hurry up, VM !
 
I would rather they fix the SH problems or issue different routers.

I don't want 2 devices plugged in (and have to pay for one of those!) to get the service I pay for.
 
I have to agree.. I was looking forward to only having one device rather than the two.. I looks like R28 addresses quite a few issues but it's still only beta:

This is a list of all the feature requests we are currently examining to see if we can include them in a future firmware update. They were taken from this thread on the main forum.

We've not finished our investigation into if it's practical for us to include all of these in the Super Hub firmware, but we do hope to include as many as possible. This list is here to show you the features we're already looking at so you don't need to request them again.

Also to speed the availability of Modem Mode (Bridge Mode) these features will not be included in that firmware update available in the near future. When we have more information on which features will be selected and when they'll be available I'll post it on the forum.

•Add Super Hub reboot option
•Increased overlay GUI timeout (also add user defined option) - This is currently 180 seconds, needs to be minimum of 360 seconds and/or user defined

•Add Modem Mode (Bridge Mode) - Ability to place the Super Hub in 'dumb modem' mode
•Remove reboot after reserving a LAN IP - Currently, the Super Hub reboots after every LAN IP is reserved. Should be able to add multiple before applying the setting and rebooting the Super Hub
•Add DDNS support - Ability to set-up DDNS services
•Add ability to specify alternate DNS - Ability to set an alternate DNS on Super Hub, used for 'OpenDNS' type services
•Add Quality Of Service (QOS) functionality - Adding a QOS feature that will allow certain traffic to be prioritized
•Add ability to directly access 'Advanced' GUI via unique URL - So instead of entering 192.168.0.1 (or http://routerlogin.net) you could enter 192.168.0.1/advanced (or http://routerlogin.net/advanced)

Add Modem Mode (Bridge Mode) - Ability to place the Super Hub in 'dumb modem' mode - Looks interesting.. Still as You said, I'd rather have the all-in-one I've paid for.
 
I bought my DIR-655 to use with previous VM supplied cable modem, and all was rosy.....only when I had the SouperHub (sic) forced on me with 30Mb (free !) upgrade did I lament its featureset.....was all set to sell the D-Link on, but think this won't be the case now ;)
Roll on Bridge-mode !

BUT reading list this does not suggest any "WiFi Improvement" - or have I missed something?
 
I got fed up of waiting for this magical firmware as it was supposed to be out in May.

I'm on 30Mb too and in the end requested a modem only so the head office sent me a Netgear VMNG300 modem which:

A) Was of much higher build quality than the SuperHub.
B) Much more weighty (a sign of higher quality components inside maybe?).
C) All my gripes with the Hub were in the bin now.

I use a Netgear WNDR3700 router and Netgear GS108 Gigabit switch and with the modem this combo works flawlessly.

I used to use the SuperHub in manual modem only mode by adding the router to the hub's DMZ and disabling the firewall and all services inc wifi but even that didn't help in improving the poor quality of the SuperHub.

How did you go about doing that?

I want to do the same, the wireless is a joke on the SH.
 
Huddy did turning it down increase the stability? I can say since doing so my hub has been on about 35days and no real slowdown on it!

When my housemate spilled a glass of water on our standalone modem, Virgin outright refused to send me a replacement standalone and said because i'm on the 50Mb package, it's superhub or a downgrade :(

Apparently they completely ran out of the standalone 50Mb modems shortly after the superhubs were introduced.

I'm on my second superhub now and i have to say, it's very different from the first (which didn't die btw - the same housemate stole it). build quality is less and it's lighter and such.

that said, the connection, both internet and wireless seems to be reasonably reliable. mine's set to Wireless-G only though.
 
I just got my Superhub today. It's a VMDG480 and as you've probably guessed, the wireless connection is very temperamental. It varies from 130mbps, all the way down to 9mbps, and speedtest.net reports a maximum of 3mbps down, and 1mbps up.
Wired connections are fine (31mbps down, 3mbps up)

I still have my d-link router with WRT firmware on it, but I'm really not sure how to set it up to handle only the wireless part of my network.
Anyone give any advice on that?
 
Ok, I think i've got it all up and running. Tell me if I've done this right:-

I set the DMZ host on the superhub to my d-link routers IP address, and on the d-link router I disabled WAN, and set DHCP server to the superhub's address.

Is that right? or is there anything else I should set?
