VmWare Kit List

I havent gotton pricing yet, currently thinking of the best method to back up data held on the virtual machines stored on the MSA.

Your list puts mine to shame somewhat :D

Hehe, and it is still small by some companies :)

You can still use something like BackupExec to make backups of the servers as you would have done before, we are going to use ESX Ranger, which is a lot cheaper than the Symantec flavour... Backs up the VM's as they are I believe..

Could i use an external rack mounted Ultrium 448, connect it to one of the DL's and install Backup Exec onto one of the VM's?

Yes you can. I have an advantage of some spare DL380's, so I am going to use one of those as a backup server. The night backup will be Disk to Disk (Hence the 10TB os SATA disks) then transfer that to tape once it has finished...

Just hope there are enough hours in the day :D

I would seriously look at Visioncores VRanger Pro though, license from my vendor is under £400 :)

Before you go buying any backup software, look at the new offering in vSphere (VI4)

VMware data protection, integrated into virtual center, deduplicated online backups to a network share. File level restore etc - its standard in foundation upwards iirc.

Get yourself something with a few 1tb SATA drives and a SCSI card - do your backups to that box then do a tape backup of it.

Should save you a few k ;)
