What is vmware exactly? I've been told I can use it to play a game that has compatibility problems with windows xp.

virtualpc is the same (and free now)

you'll have a window that uses part of your ram (you can set how much) and a virtual hard drive, it thinks that is a pc with its own set of hardware

ie, you can be running windows xp and in vpc/vmware you can install windows98 or whatever which will be launched from within xp

what game is it? chances are you dont need vpc/vmware, there's a good tool called dosbox that emulates old dos for running old games in :)

VMware lets you create a virtual PC on your PC. I run Windows XP as my OS and then ubuntu linux on VMware on my spare rig. Its pretty handy for testing stuff aswell..

So I will need a copy of windows 98? Dungeon Keeper 2 just won't play without crashing every 20mins on xp pro without sound disabled, even with the compatiblity wizard enabled.

I attempted to use vmware to play the original Total Annihilation on my XP PC. Ran like a dog, so to speak. (I found a TA patch, 1.3 or something which allowed it to work with XP for me)

But personally i'd warn you not to expect it to run as fast as a normal PC would run it, when you use VMWare.

It has very low requirements so it shouldn't be a problem, according to the publishers website.

Minimum Specs:

Pentium 166MHz MMX
32Mb RAM
No need for 3D acceleration (software 3D)

That's the specs to run the virtual PC, the overheads if you will. Then you'll need more resources on top of that to run a game or other app.

have you tried turning off sound acceleration in xp?

-edit, looked on google and found this.. might help if you've not tried it..

1. Full install Dungeon Keeper 2.

2. Apply patch 1.7.

(if you during installation get an error message saying "Can't run 16-bit Windows Program. Cannot find file..."
then go to Start - Run... and type regedit. Make sure the following key is disabled (set to 0):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation=0)

3. Install Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit 3.0 (use Google to find it - it's free from Microsoft).

4. Run the program and create a new database.

5. Click Fix.

6. Name of the program to be fixed: Dungeon Keeper 2 - Name of the vendor for this program: Bullfrog Productions.

7. Program file location: Browse for the location of Dkii.exe in gamedir.

8. Operating System Modes: None - Click Next.

9. Compatibility Fixes: select EmulateSlowCPU - Click Next.

10. Click Finish.

11. Choose File and Install and then exit the program.

12. Create a shortcut for Dkii.exe, choose properties and add -32biteverything in the Target commandline
(it should look something like this: "C:\Games\Dungeon Keeper 2\Dkii.exe" -32biteverything).

13. Run the shortcut to start the game.

Dungeon keeper 2. Graphics are pretty good for the required specs.

Yep I've tried pretty much everything. At least I can install the game, loads of people have had problems just trying to do that on xp.
