If I wanted to connect to my home PC from another location what info do I need from my home PC? I have never really tried doing this so it's something I need a little help with.

I use Remote Desktop Assistance 'mstsc' or something like that. I tried earlier but it kept saying could not connect to the machine.

I am using my Virgin Media Cable Broadband box so i'm not going through a Router.

Please help :-)

Install VNC Server on the machine you want to connect *to*, and VNC Viewer on the machine you're connecting from.

Assuming the VNC Server machine is your home computer, you'll need to:

1) Open TCP port 5900 in your firewall

2) Configure port forwarding within your router. To do this, login to your router (via a browser), and forward tcp port 5900 to the internal IP of your computer.

details:

http://www.portforward.com

After configuring your home network, you need to know the public IP address, type that into VNC viewer on your other machine.

If your public IP is dynamic, use a dynamic DNS client such as http://www.no-ip.com

You just need to forward port 3389 for remote desktop. VNC can be a little more useful but isn't always necessary.
LogMeIn doesn't need any ports forwarded and works from within a browser, very handy indeed.

Your public IP address, the port used by VNC and has been forwarded through your router, and any password you put (recommended!) on the VNC server.
