Right I'lll ask in here as its the video place but if its not and should be somewhere else can some one RTM for me!

Anyhoo;

Father has sent me a copy of my wedding video from auckland (nz) as I need it by the weekend, however he has somehow sent me a vob file? Can/How do i convert this to avi/divx so I can play it on my laptop?

(also free if possible)

Super will convert almost any video format to any other video format, and it's free.
The website is a nightmare to navigate though...takes more work to find the download link than it does to use the software.

vob files are dvd files, so any dvd software will play them. wmp will play them even, as long as there is an mpeg decoder installed
you can burn the vob file to a dvd and play it on your home dvd player too

There are also plenty of free programs available to convert the dvd vob files into an mpegs/avi's should you want to. Just search on google and there are many guides.

just install VLC player (its free) that will do it :)

Cheers but still would like to convert it

I got stuck in a loop of downloading a web page and not the file! Anyway trying it at the moment but it seems to be taking forever

to be honest i have had a look however everyone of them seems to either crash, be spam or spyware :(

I use videora to convert files for me. It's completely free, but designed for use with ipods. It does have lots of different conversion options though as well as a simple mode so it might be worth a shot. There's no spyware with it either.

Another Vote for SUPER.. Just persevere with the site!.. and the DL speed can sometimes be V-E-R-Y slow due to demand or crap servers!!..

Other than that the software is a breeze to use and very good at what it does!!..

You could transcode the VOB file with VLC, I have done this several times and it works a treat. Not sure how long it would take to do a VOB file though.

I'd use staxrip, to convert to x264 with an easy interface :)

either that, or convert it manually in vdubmod to a codec of your choice.

Simply change the file extension to .mpg and it should play straight away in media player or whatever.

Right so tried super and it worked but was a little too complicated, then found out divx converter works with them! However one more question/issue is there any programs that will split one vob file in half if you just say at what time point?
