Question, what's it called when you sing in your monty python Esqu women voice?

Lately I have been doing some vocal exercises at home, in the car on commute etc. Are there any vocalists on here that could impart some tips, what your range is, what you sing etc.

I don't know, it seems to me the voice is an instrument, the more you use and practice it the better it gets, but I don't see it mentioned often on here.

It's called 'falsetto'.

Just sing, sing and sing. Don't strain yourself, and try not to sing from your throat. Watch some videos on YouTube explaining how to breathe, how to use your diaphragm and what not.

A teacher would be good, but there are loads of great lessons available for free online. It's a great place to start. :)

lol yes i sing/practice a lot in the car. i'm sure people think i'm crazy. it has helped me (i hope)

my range isn't that good, i've never had lessons but would like to get some advice.
i love a good singing voice though, it just blows me away when i hear a powerful voice.

this is a great example of what i like

Sorry to revive my own thread :p

I am a couple of months in to my doing pretty much daily vocal exercises. I acquired some vocal exercise mp3s - bubbles, ma, ah, oh, 54321, goo, Solfege, ee, la eh oh, i love the way you look at me. Not quite the same as a teacher but it works. Get some strange looks when im driving doing them :)

I am much more bassy than i expected to be, Going by my guitar I can hit an E2 comfortably, D2 but it hurts a bit. In my normal voice range is up to just less than E4, but in my falsetto after warming up I can hit the F5. Not sure if it sounds ridic though.

Bought a cheepo dynamic mic. Anybody brave enough to put up records of themselves singing?

Have lessons, seriously helped me when I was singing in a band. The best thing I learned was how to bridge from my "chest" voice into "head" voice smoothly whilst keeping my high range strong without going into stupid falsetto (ala Matt Belamy :p). Not sure if you could teach yourself how to do this as it's pretty weird at first.

If you want to hear me sing, check out:

Most rock stuff is here - http://www.disturbinthepeace.co.uk/media.htm Check out the track Gypsy Road which is nearly falsetto at full rock voice.

Loads of softer stuff here - http://www.disturbinthepeace.co.uk/mp3/media.htm

Check out this one especially which is 8 part acapella which contains soft falsetto - http://www.disturbinthepeace.co.uk/mp3/aplaceinmyheart.mp3

This has got a lot of falsetto also - http://www.disturbinthepeace.co.uk/mp3/brokenman.mp3

Aye i think this is where i am suffering by not having proper lessons and using audio book guides. I dont have anybody to correct me. Then again, by taking the try it and see approach i may stumble upon the approach that works best for me. I have been working on smoothing those transitions.

Tempted to spawn an Offically starred Karekeo thread. Post up backing tracks to known songs and challenge posters to lay the lyrics down.

haha ok, you will cringe at this because from your post above you are a pro compared to me.
i honestly am just a bedroom amateur recording on a digital camera for fun
how do you think i could improve?

.

No cringing, don't put yourself down. First thought, buy a cheapo dynamic mic. They are only circa 17 quid from a certain electronics store thats into cartography.
