Does such a PDA exist that has voice recognition capability? ie. I could talk into as I walk about and it types it up. Or any other hand held device.

Cheers :)

edit* on 2nd thoughts not sure if this is the right section to post in... mods?

Do you need it to do it in real time ?

I use my PDA to do the voice recording and then NaturallySpeaking on my PC to do the recognition.

Worked well for over 6 years now :D

MS Voice Command, will allow you to do some things using voice recognition.

I agree. I had voice command 1.5 which was great. Answer calls, reads out the number of the person calling etc... And version 1.6 is out now.

Any pda with a mic can do this.

Could you give an example of a product?

No I don't need real time, but something that has a fast turn around when back at the office. Is this method fairly accurate? ...and is it just a file that you upload to your PC into the NaturallySpeaking software?

Basically I have people needing to inspect buildings. So lots of walking around, and would like them to be able to have some small light weight device, that would enable them to produce reports. I was thinking voice recognition, as something like a tablet would be a bit fiddley... or would it?

Any ideas people? Oh and cost is fairly important! ;)

Could someone give me an example of a PDA that would be suitable? I just need a starting point, as I have no clue about PDA's yet.

Originally I used a voice dictation ANALOG recorder and plugged it into PC and used DragonDictate to capture the mic input and produce a text file.

Now use MP3 player and trasnfer the file over USB. and convert using NaturallySpeaking ( as leaskovski provided link to )

Accuracy SEEMS less than normal as you dont' see it acting in real time and alter voice accordingly.

On average I'd say I'm at 90-95% and often can attribute the errors to background noise in the environment while recording.

But, I'm 10+ years using the technology and have a "more precise" voice when dictating - a bit like my "business call voice".

I'd guess you'll probasbly start at about 80-85% accuracy and it will improve with usage.

Cost is least with a simple mp3 recorder ( and your folks will love having a decent mp3 player to use the rest fo the time :) ) and s/w back at the office.

My PDA with built in sat nav has a voice function to enter saved destinations.

Useful when on the move.
