VOIP Line - cloning phone on same network?

Currently using Sipgate and all fine and dandy.

HOWEVER, I want to run a second line using the same phone number (akin to an extension if referring to pots).

Anyone have experience of doing this with their VOIP provider?

I have some thoughts but not sure if would work.

Some sip providers support multiple registrations of a single account, some do not. You might also have problems if you’re behind the same NAT device with inbound calls.
 
On voipfone you just add an extension, both ring/work independently and I have the option to remove them from the call group or set them to ring if the others aren’t picked up etc. I’d expect other providers also have such basic features available or how else do you scale up your head count when required?
 
I quite happily have a sipgate line running on the land line, and using GS Wave on my mobile. Both ring, and both are able to make separate outgoing calls

Am running a PfSense appliance so have a few toys in the bag so to speak in terms of flexibility.

I am paying £10 a month with Sipgate for unlimited landline and mobile calls, Voipfone is considerably more when I check. You get what you pay for I guess but I have time on my hands so will try what I can :D
 
It should be fine doing it with Sipgate. I've got my Yealink SIP phone connected to my Sipgate account and often have my laptop connected with a softphone (Linphone IIRC) or my iPhone connected with Bria. It works just fine and that's with the Yealink and Bria connected from the same internet connection going out through the same NAT router. All connected phones ring when a call comes in.

Yes, that makes sense.

My Polycom has 2 lines in the sense I can make 2 calls at the same time.

If I am already on a call, can a second incoming call not go through to the second line or does it not work like that?
 
I can't remember to be honest, there's very very few calls coming into my Sipgate account. On my Gradwell account if I'm on a call on one device and there's a second device connected when another call comes in then the second device will ring. If call waiting is enabled on my first device then the second device will ring and the first device will show another incoming call.
 
I reconfigured the server details on the phone and now, if am on a call and another comes through, the lamp flashes for the second line :D
 
I've done this using asterisk running on a raspbery pi before. Can be a bit fiddly to set up but you can essentialy set up as many phones as you want as extensions on asterisk and then you configure asterisk to send outgoing calls onwards to sipgate. And likewise for incoming you can set it to ring all extensions, or specific phones etc.
