(Have put this in here as it uses the tintyweb, but if a mod deems fit, please move to a more relevant section)

Just wondering, are there any peeps on here who use a VOIP provider and if so, which one?

Reason being is that when I moved house, I moved from BT onto O2 to provide all my needs (line rental, calls, broadband) but it appears that they put the number in the directory.......can't even remember being asked if i wanted to go ex-directory.

Despite registering with TPS over 2 months ago, am still getting calls form some very persistent salespeople trying to flog me PPI claims.

Plus, I am paying extra each month to O2 for caller ID on the line, which is rather gaulling really.

I realise I am in contract with O2 and have to keep the line, but was wondering how easy / difficult it would be to start using a VOIP provider for all my calls. Then I can leave the O2 line with only my modem connected and any annoying calls will just ring out and I will never hear them again :D

Am not particulary attached to the number that O2 gave me as only a family and a few friends have that, so will be easy to pass on any new numbers.

Cheers in advance

Dashing off for a look-see now.

Is it all fairly easy to get up and running?

edit: seems very geared towards a business. Am only after a home use solution really

All I will say is avoid G3 (IMO) - they suck in every imaginable way. 4 of our clients use them and cause them and us nothing but problems, along with being slow and generally incompetent

Single user is just a single number to VOIP service but they have a lot of bells and whistles you can use too. I sometimes switch my number over to fax-to-email to recieve a fax if I'm away from the house and I need it urgently.

I've managed a few times to get a broadband line ported, it is a bit of a faff requiring changing your broadband line first but it works.

We've used Goldfish and they've been quite good.

Just a thought..... have you asked for a new number on the basis that you finding the large numbers of unsolicited calls distressing??

I had the same problem a while back, all you have to do when you get one of them calls is play along until you get a company name and employee name then politely ask for the manager/line manager, if they ask why explain you are registered on the no cold calling schemes you are with, and that if they ring again you will report them and they will find themselves with a rather large fine.

I had to do that with three companies and I never have had any problems since.

Doesn't work with overseas call centres.

I use sipgate with a Linksys PAP2 device so I can use my existing wireless handsets, works a treat, no issues.

I switched to VOIP to avoid cold-calls to the house, registering on the service to block and anonymous caller rejection wouldn't block them on virgin as they were international, so I sill have the virgin phoneline as it would work out more for my broadband if I canceled the phone, weird, but it is unplugged from any phone, just the VOIP is connected now.
