Volkswagen Reliability

I think skoda are the most reliable VAG brand at the moment...you would have thought if one brand of the group are doing things better than the rest that they would take a look and see what they are doing differently?

I think there's 2 things there

First, are you thinking of the JD power survey as they always rank quite highly there? That rates overall ownership experience so there's more to it than just reliability

Secondly, the average Skoda is probably less complex than the average Audi in terms of equipment etc, so there's more to go wrong

Skoda are rated higher in these surveys because people expect less, Audi are rated lower because people expect more

1985 Golf GTi 8v. Total problems so far:

Starter solenoid £12
Broken shifter linkage £0 (5 minutes with a welder)

I've been lucky with two high mileage VW's;

Golf 3 = 100k with only a broken heat shield + standard servicing
Golf 4 = 190k odd bits, new oil sump, rear suspension bushes, front suspension arm 'thing' + standard servicing

From what I remember reading on Honest John, the early 2000 models of the Polo are notorious for having problems, they are better now. My family have had a fair few VW's: grandmother had her golf for around 20 years, my mum had a polo in the early 90s that lasted well, they also had a 2nd hand diseasel polo that was fine until written off by a clumsy woman crashing into them in a supermarket car park and now have an 07 plate diesel polo. My dad has had far more problems with his e class merc being a bit of a lemon than with any of their previous VW's.

My wife had a lupo which was fine until it was stolen and written off, she then had a 2nd hand polo which was also fine, then a new 05 plate polo, fine too, and now an 08 golf, so far so good. All just above average mileage (12-14,000 a year).

All anecdotal evidence of course.

Bought a mk4 Golf GT TDI 150 on a '52' plate back in January with 108,000 miles and FSH.

Since then I've had the following problems:

Alternator - £200
Injector wiring loom - £160
Turbo - £1100

Its been on the drive for over 5 weeks now, something wrong with the engine internals, valves or camshift is suspected.

As soon as its fixed I'm getting rid, anybody after a completely unreliable VW Golf?

Hmm,

It does seem as though '02 was a bad year all round, then.

Still, if the Japanese cars are tops for reliability, then that's likely what I'll go for, despite having a pseudo patriotic feeling towards buying German.

i wonder what the service schedules were like for these 02 cars that go wrong? variable servicing has a lot ot answer for

ive been looking at audi s4s but wont touch one that has been on variable servicing. they would go for 20k miles or more on the same oil

 how much for an alternator??

lol they saw him coming

those pd150s, ive seen a few of those with OTT cam wear. bad servicing again. turbo would be user error or bad servicing, or both

I meant its a better car, not more reliable.

Undoubtedly the jap stuff is more reliable, but I wouldnt buy an Almera if it dispensed notes from the dashboard if it ever went wrong. I get severely depressed just looking at cars like that.

Because Mondeos are sooooooooo interesting, right?

the turbo went due to a weld repair on the oil feed line

im thinking the fsh is not all its cracked up to be

You never know what you'll get with any car - it could have FSH then have some ***** repair done that will go 1,000 miles later and cost you thousands.

My 620ti only had routine parts right until I got it, then in 5 weeks I'd killed the alternator and the clutch control arm. You just never know :)

Maybe that says more about the owner than the car ;)

ive probably said it already, but audi s4 service schedules were servicing every 20k, so you get a lot of knackered ones

fsh means diddly squat
