So is it a case of the normal 7970's are turning up voltage locked and the GHz editions are unlocked? if so i can understand that as it is normal for second or third tier cards to be artificially held back so as to protect the top tier cards.

but of course if it is the top tier cards that are now having these features locked out then that is not so good, if they are launched like that then fine but if they start out unlocked and now they are clipping their wings then that is defiantly wrong. Just like the Sony ps3's that were advertised with certain features only to have those features removed at a latter date.
 
I wish all cards were voltage locked and partners couldn't create unstable cards.

On the other hand, I have seen a couple of unstable 6 series Nvidia cards with "The driver stopped responding and has recovered" error. 95% of the time, a small increase in core volts sorts this problem out but with the 6 series you can't do this. RMA time :(
