voltage question

The Zalman extreme is not the best cooler you could have got but since you are only running 6 GB RAM you should be able to hit 4.2 Ghz at far lower temps than you are getting

My stable 4.2 is hot for 2 reasons 1. I have a thirsty CPU but more importantly i have 12 G RAM which calls for a high QPI-VTT

I would suggest underclocking your RAM using a low divider like SPD 6 and Lower the uncore multi to 12 or 13, thus you can lower your qpi-vtt which since the mem controller is on the CPU will lower temps then you can get your 4.2 with sat 21x200 BCLK ( no turbo)

See what minimum vcore you need for that and how the temps are going the you can look at raising the mem and qpi-vtt. Depending on what you do with your system you may not even notice much of a difference with underclocked RAM and will have a cooler CPU

and maybe 4.2 GHz is not that big a deal though the numbers seem magical and call to me in my sleep !! I am happy at the moment with 4.16 Ghz which Primes at mid 80's fro me and general 3d work is mid to high 70's

Cinebench for 4.16 is 7.22
Cinebench for 4.2 is 7.28

Since cinema 4d is my main program, cinebench scores and cpu temps are all i care about and a .06 CB difference is not an issue really

agreed paul that the zelman extreme isnt what id choose if i was spending £50 of my own money, but it was off a pal who purchased it for his i5,it was to big for his case unless he left a side panel off lol,so i got for the bargain price of £10 :) also modded it with another 120mm working in push n pull with the existing fan,it'll do for now until i upgrade to the 2nd 480 and some water cooling when i can afford it around xmas time :)
and thanks for the advice paul,i have indeed decided to stay at 4.1 for now as its all i'll need,i'll try pushing on further with water in a few months, trouble is all this tweaking gets addictive :P

To give you more testing to do, you could try a lower multi with a higher bclk, that may allow for lower vcore, then again may not, but worth testing though, just to let u know the mobo will easily go 220+ bclk.

The temps are not brilliant thats for sure, but you have to take it with a pinch of salt really, it really all depends on what the computer will be used for day to day, gaming and stuff like that will never reach those temps, even rendering/encoding rarely reaches stress levels of heat.

The only thing i use my comp for that ever reaches prime levels of heat is F@H, but you are correct it does get addictive.
