I am tempted to volt mod my 4850, i am not very good at soldering, so i am going to do a pencil mod, im going to do the safe version, and get about 1.4v out of it. I am planning on getting myself a Multimeter today, anyone modded before and have any advice to give me?
 
Check to the decent multimeter, i think i have a decent set of pencils around too. I just got my multimeter just now, and some soldering stuff for me to practice with, if i decide to mod properly.
 
I wouldn't like to pencil mod myself.

EDIT - hehe, I re-read that and it can be interpreted in two ways :p

I've hard modded most of my recent ATI cards and only messed one up (I think it survived after I removed the mod). That foul-up was a memory voltage mod though. Core mods seem much easier and more reliable. The vast majority of power is there anyway - sometimes voltmodding the memory decreases the overclock!

The only problem I've had sometimes is having non-reference layouts, so had to go hunting for advice / chip pinouts. (I'm not an electronics expert by any means, so I generally rely on the kind people @ XtremeSystems for such things).

Well worth doing if you're watercooled, as heat is almost a non-issue.

As for how high to go - I always consider +20% safe myself, with anything over being questionable.
 
Well my 4850 sits at 30 degrees idle and under furmark stress gets to 54 degrees, no normal games get it past 50 degrees. I have the headroom, ive heard that i should set the bios to 1.15v, then shade to reduce the ohms to 800 ish, to give 1.4v in the chip, the memory hardly overclocks as it is, could do with some volts i reckon. I have the kit to solder, but ive not had any practice, ive got some of those cheap kits to practice on.
 
Using a pencil to reduce the resistance of a resistor (by literally colourinng it in so to speak for like 10 minutes depending on your grade of pencil) therefore increasing the voltage to a certain area of the card (in this case the core). Increasing the voltage will generally increase the stability of your overclocks however will also inscrease the temp your card runs at.
 
I've been thinking about pencil modding my 4850s in an attempt to reach 900Mhz on the cores. They can currently do about 720 at stock volts, or the max voltage increase available from modding the bios.
