Hi

I have the chance to buy one of these for about £80 :D am i right in thinking they are RWD? im thinking i could have mucho fun in this and abuse it just for a laugh.

Cheers.

Well i bought it for £100, pictures later :D My dad said he could use it for work also. All the electrics work, sunroof, windows etc. done 136k miles and with full volvo service history, and it goes quite well too.

Yep, they are real wheel drive.
My father had a turbo version a LONG time ago.
Unfortunately they are one of the least "fun" cars available. Virtually impossible to destroy, they probably have a half life close to Uranium.
Can't say I'd recommend one. Might be cheap to buy, but unless you're taking it banger racing, I'd forget it, would cost you a fortune WHEN it starts going wrong.

I love the way people appear to assume that just because something is RWD it's going to be a hoot to drive :p

Dude, its a Volvo 740 with a live rear axle, it's not a 200SX or a Corolla AE86 so you won't be hanging the back end out in huge lairy powerslides on every corner :p

My dad has a 940SE Estate as a 2nd car which i think is just like a bigger version of the 740's.

RWD yeah, but not really fun to drive, especially up hills.

Why not try stripping it down to get a bit more performance?
Its not like you're exactly going to miss the 1980s interior...

well im open to ideas on what to do with it :D reading that home to rome thread with the old volvo in it might give me some inspiration, but basically its gonna be a spare car for me to thrash around in and thrape to death, and maybe for my dad to use now and again.

As already suggested, take it banger racing, would be a good car to do it in.
It would certainly be an experience to relate back later in life and is likely to be a LOT of fun, certainly more so tha waiting for it to breakdown and seeing the repair costs.
Go on, give it a good send off.

Contrary to Fox's post, there's nothing wrong with a properly-located live axle and AE86s are average drift cars at best...They certainly wouldn't have got anywhere were it not for ID.

The Turbo version will give you 300bhp. Yours is about 140bhp stock...A few choice mods will give you 150bhp. A few hundred quid will give you 200bhp.

Surprisingly, they're not that heavy...under 1300Kg. You can lose about 200Kg if you strip the interior.

So...150bhp, 1100Kg...not bad :)

doing what if i may ask? i wasnt going to spend ANY money on it what so ever really but im just interested in what i could do to it :p

A decent, cat-free exhaust, a bit of manifold porting...Attention to the breathing, basically.

Combine that with a lightened flywheel and some head work.

volvo 740's aren't expensive to fix when they go wrong. most service parts can be gotten cheaply from GSF, and they are dead simple to work on. plus there are loads in the scrappies if you need more complicated bits.
anyway if they are serviced properly they pretty much go on forever.

they do drink the juice though.

put a spolier and flames on it and drive it down to rome :D there really not that bad cars, they may not the most inspireing thing to drive they certainly get the job done

You purchased this car to thrash & rag about in, what's the TypeR for then ?
Do you just look at it?
