Volvo hit 700BHP - One for Diesel heads.

Given that by law they are limited to 52 - 56MPH, a very long time..... ;):D

Joking apart, block changing (i.e. not going 1,2,3,4 etc in gearchanges) even with a fair load behind it, it'll out drag a lot of cars quite easily.

I say this because a truck with 420BHP and an empty trailer will happily out drag a lot of cars & light vans - I do it all the time! :D

I looked into this as I didn't believe you at all (thought the cars must not be trying), but it seems things are much closer than I expected.

R420
Power: 420HP Net weight: 7350kg

Citroen C1 (My girlfriend has one, must be the slowest car on the road)
Power: 68HP Weight: 790kg
Quarter Mile times as calculated below.

R420 = 20.56 seconds
C1 = 18 seconds

Cheers, thats my point although its the sheer torque (2100Nm for the R420, 94Nm C1) and gearing that make a lot of the difference, I'd imagine a manual R420 or R500 unloaded would probably beat it with the right choice of gear selection, I say manual as the Auto's change gear considearbly slower alas.

The "oomph" provided by the torque of an HGV tractor unit has to be experienced to be believed!

700BHP is another league again, never mind 3150Nm of torque!

When i had my first car (quite new saxo 1.1), i was on the A34 heading towards kidsgrove, truck minus trailor was infront doing 40, decided to overtake, truck driver didn't like this so he put his foot down, couldn't get past at first, must have been delimited because we got up to 65ish, he stopped gaining speed and i eventually got past, underpowered saxo ***.

Yes, thats the speed limiter kicking in & spoiling his fun....

Do the auto boxes go through every single gear as you accelerate, or can the tractor unit detect that you're not towing a heavy load and skip gears?

No, they block change better than a driver with a manual,i.e, the correct ratio & gear every time, the trouble is they do it a lot slower than a driver with a manual box can swap cogs which slows the process down.

I bet it's quite an experience driving something like that minus trailer :D ...you could go out 'chav bating' ...can imagine a 7 ton Volvo tractor unit revving up at the lights with the Corsa's ...well the idea of it makes me smile anyway

Most new volvos come with I-Shift which is auto gear change but a manual internal. Regarded as the best HGV Gearbox out there at the moment. It skips gears auto depending on load etc. The engine is a 6 Cylinder, ill get a pic of a piston out of a 12 litre i currently have in bits

Yes, its a laugh. The trouble is, you can quite easily get the thing to do a 180 if it has no traction control!

Off the line, a milkfloat will beat you, once rolling though, its quite the reverse, if anything, its best to try this with an empty trailer, the trailer weight helps keep the drive axle on the road and gives you the grip you need to stop it spinning or the traction control feathering the throttle.

Same as the AS-tronic fitted in DAF's, Fodens etc, personally, I'd prefer it if they somehow made a proper auto box for a truck, I suppose they have not made a torque converter than can handle insane torque levels yet! :D

I've tried a few I-Shift Volvo's and to my surprise, preferred the EPS system as fitted to Mercedes and also Scanias Opticruise.

Your the only person to say that lol. People i know who own/use the Merc and Scania systems say their crap :D

I know, I've lost enough arguments over this recently...... :o

To be fair, the last I-Shift I drove was for Culina Logistics nearly 3 years ago, perhaps, they have improved since then?

The Volvo Automatic Volvo FH's we have @ Stobart are imo awful (05 & 06 plate at my depot) , the older manuals were a lot nicer.
