Ahoy everyone,

I'm just doing a bit of research about the Volvo S60 and S80.
I searched the forums and people always recommended the S60 over the S80.

It seems you get more for your money if you purchase an S80, the car might be slightly older but the kit and what not.

Are there are any common problems to look out for on an 2007-2008 S80?

Cheers guys

I have a 2004 s80 d5, the later one is less reliable especially for the money they are, your local to me, there's an independent in charlwood round the back of gatwick who is useful, give him a call

They are dear to fix so think about a warranty

I gather the s80 is prone to rear suspension issues that are not cheap to put right. The S60 is not and is only marginally smaller. Also if you want a car that size most people opt for the V70.

The later s80 auto boxes are pretty fragile, but I'm no expert, the cars are so heavy they eat suspension components, however are solid vehicles

I've been running an S60 over the last 12 months now.

No major problems to report. Had a coilpack go which was easily sorted, likewise the track rod end that went. Total repair for both was under £200 inc labour.

The volvo is on 130,000 miles now and going strong.

I average about 28 mpg in my T5 which is very surprising.

Thanks for the help, at the moment it is all just planning but this info is invaluable to me.

Not ready for a estate yet ;)

The reason I like the S80 over the S60 is a lot down to the actual interior, I think the S80 has a lovely interior whereas the S60 has a bit to much going on.

That is very surprising, I read they were pretty bad for fuel!

My engine choice would most likely be a 2.0 litre or the D5 diesel (hopefully not)

I'm getting 38 mpg from my d5 mainly a roads and town so should get better on long runs, the interior is fantastic, comfortable spacious and well equiped

It's so smooth and wafty I'm enjoying plodding along listening to classic fm

I think all s80 d5s are auto as well

Are the new S80s that problematic as well?
I only thought first gen were full of niggles.

Who knows, I was told by a Volvo independent that early 2001 - 2003 models suffer engine failure, mine 2004 /2005 has a soft auto box and the new shape ones have auto box problems, engine failure and dodgy electrics, the dashboards give up.

All of them are big heavy cars so go through suspension on a regular basis and eat tyres.

Mines had two front window motors and new suspension here and there.

However the car is an executive saloon so comes with all those associated running costs, I wouldn't buy one thinking yay cheap motoring it's a Volvo it'll go on forever.

I loved my gen1 S80. Would i buy another though, NO!

Given that I personally would only ever buy either for comfort, I'd go for the S80 over the S60. If they're really that much more likely to crap out in spectacular fashion than the S60 then I may have to re-consider, but I just doubt that they're really that much more unreliable than the S60 until I've seen good statistics supporting it.

That's awful!

I get 45mpg towing, you should get more than that unless you're sitting in huge queues all the time. Is it Auto?

I don't think i'd buy an S80. The 60 is plenty big enough for me, although i really could do with an estate ie V70. But all i'd gain with an S80 is slightly more legroom and a slightly bigger boot. It serves no purpose anymore really.

I was trying to see if there was something wrong but no 39mpg is pretty much normal, wildly different to Volvo's own figures, funny that.

This morning 25 mins A road roundabouts few d/c and couple of lights say 10 miles, 20 miles on m25 which was half @ 70 and half at a stop start crawl and then 4 miles of town into work circa 38 mpg

I get way more than that, but it's a manual.
