Hi. Was wondering if anyone had any experience of these. Currently have my eye on one as current car is getting too hard to get in and out off with the knackered back

Depends. Do you have £5k to spend? Don't bother. Do you have £15k to spend? Nice cars*

*Obviously the crossover point between do and don't isn't quite £5k or £15k but you get the idea.

No, but they are old and complex cars at the bottom of the market and probably not something somebody looking for a cheap car is going to be prepared to chuck money at.

My dad's friend has one. He rates it very highly, but it has not been cheap to run by any means: things don't go wrong very often, but the few issues he's had have been major and extremely expensive.

I looked at one going from a s80 but I decided against it in the end, drove lovely well specced and pretty bullet proof however when something goes wrong it'll be eyewateringly expensive my s80 was bad enough.

Unless you need 7 seats they are the worst premium SUV you can buy. Diesel engine is beyond clattery, interior is plasticky and noisy, Volvo service prices are crazy too. For running costs and reliability get an rx400h. For luxury get a range rover. For an all rounder get an x5. And if you want to be shafted by a man in a suit who finds it a chore to take your money, get an ml320. But why get an xc90?

What's wrong with the D5? Its always been a good diesel in my eyes.

The D5 is a fantastic diesel engine, utter tosh

Agreed. All modern cars can be eye-wateringly expensive if they go wrong, get one with a fvsh, keep it maintained as per service schedule and you should be fine. It will also help if you know someone with the volvo diagnostic tools - Dice and Vida- as this will save you about £50 per visit. I have one and it has saved me a load, not only in diagnostic fees but also petrol.

I have read that the gearboxes and 4wd bits are prone to breaking.

No idea how statistically likely this is but it's mentioned on honest john for example.

My fiance's step-father is the sort of person who changes car every year (never seems set on anything). He then bought an xc90, and hasn't changed for 2 years so far :D

I briefly looked at these and remember reading that they have a lot of shared components with the V70, maybe even the chassis. It seemed because the parts weren't really up to the job they knocked suspension joints out at an alarming rate.

My S60 d5 used to average 50mpg combined....

Obviously no XC90 will acheive this, but the D5 is a stunning engine still up there with modern competition.

The XC90 has a few niggles in the 4wd system that only become apparant in this kind of weather. If you go past one in a fiesta its because the 4wd is broken. These niggles are expensive to put right. Other than that it's as good as any 4wd.

Business partner just got a brand new XC90. Very nice car to look, absolutely huge.

From what I've seen sat nav is a little disappointing because it's not integrated in to the other functions of the car, and what surprised me is no digital climate control, there's a knob you twist in increments of two degrees. :o Fuel economy is not the best, but then it is a huge vehicle.
