VPN for 2016? Thinking of changing from PIA

I'm looking for a VPN but can I just turn it on/off easily enough when I need it? Don't really need one to run all the time. I've got an Asus N66U that I can use it through but not tried it before.

IIRC Hola makes you an endpoint as well, so god knows what traffic is being spouted through your internet connection.

I've been using VyprVPN for years and can't knock the service, but they are on the iPlayer blacklist now which limits it's usefulness for me.

Anyone recommend a service that definitely isn't on the iplayer block list?

Not a VPN but for "unblocking" iPlayer, Prime etc Unlocator is great. Not had an issue in the 8 months I've had it.

Whats the difference between something like PIA compared to the one that's "built in" (or at least recommended) to the Netgear routers? (I believe it's OpenVPN)

OpenVPN is just a program that connects the VPN. You still need to pay for an account with a VPN provider. You then use the details the provider give you and copy that into OpenVPN to access the VPN.

Doing it at the router level (VPN or DNS) means you don't have to configure any other device and everything on your network will go through the same VPN.

For example i have unlocator configured on my router so any devices connected to it automatically get served with bbc.co.uk etc.

Personally, because of the way even good VPNs affect your connection unless you really need to (or really want to block your ISP from seeing any of your traffic) I wouldn't set a VPN up on your router (except in specific circumstances). Just use OpenVPN or TunnelBlick (mac) on the computer you want the VPN and turn it on and off when you want/need it. Saves it slowing all the other traffic down (such as youtube).

I was using PIA but recently started using NordVPN.

I use it on my router for Netflix from AppleTV and on my desktop as required.

I have found their support very good.

PIA are going through a few issues at the moment :(

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/0..._provider_leaves_russia_after_servers_seized/

“All Private Internet Access users must update their desktop clients at https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/ and our Android App at Google Play. Manual openvpn configurations users must also download the new config files from the client download page.

“We have decided not to do business within the Russian territory. We’re going to be further evaluating other countries and their policies.

“In any event, we are aware that there may be times that notice and due process are forgone. However, we do not log and are default secure against seizure. “If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected].

“Thank you for your continued support and helping us fight the good fight.”

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but could anybody give any advice/feedback on the following providers?

I've not used a VPN before and have done a little research before and think I've narrowed it down to these 3:

NordVPN
PIA
AirVPN

No complaints with AirVPN here, been using them for the last year or so without any problems.
I get the occasional drop out but the software (Eddie) keeps everything locked down and auto-connects to the most suitable server with zero input needed from me.

I've always used Relakks but my sub recently ran out and to resub they use a service called Payson and it seems you need an account at a Swedish bank. I need to look into it more :S

£42 a year.
