VPN Issues

I am helping a friend setup two sites to a small server.

The ISP is with Zen and they bought the better speedtouch \ thompson 608 routers.

Both obviously have static IP address.

After some messing i setup a LAN to LAN VPN connection. Both clients worked fine on the LAN and via the VPN.

Drives mapped etc.

But as soon as you try and open a largish file 3mb it grinds to a halt.

one line with the small server is 3.5mb and the other 1mb, ok so they are not mega fast lines but it took 3 minutes to open a 3mb access database, then just hung doing anything inside it.


Running remote desktop over the VPN much faster but didnt really want a client to log onto the server to do work.

Any ideas why this is?

Any advice welcome.


I also tried a trial of grenbow that didnt seem to work very well either.

Remember the limiting factor is the UPLOAD of the connection (assuming you have ADSL at both ends)

My usual recommendation for this would be to install a terminal server (same principle as your Remote Desktop except it's a dedicated server to which users can connect and work)

Thanks for the fast reply.

Yes both sides are ADSL.

Only issue is it is only for x2 people to connect, so another server maybe a bit of a over kill.

I haved used logmein / hemachi to test a couple of things remotly but slightly concerned to use this on a regular as for security issues.

Will Rdesktop be the best option then?

Can't think of any better ways to get over the slowness issues without getting an SDSL line put in.

I don't know what the existing server does so you'd be the better judge of is it's too much of a security risk.

Sounds like ip fragmentation over the vpn. I had this issue using cisco 8xx & 17xx series routers whilst creating site to site vpn's. Lowering the mtu size fixed the problem totally.

EDIT but as above I would recommend a terminal server for this sort of usage.
