I would like to set up a VPN connection so that I can secure my traffic when I’m using open public Wi-Fi I think this is called a VPN passthrough but I can’t find any reference to this in the Cisco books I’ve looked at. Could someone advise me on the best most flexible VPN connection to do this? I have a pool of 8 static public IP addresses available to me. One IP is already in use on my Cisco 1841 router acting at the broadband router.

FYI I’m CCNA intraining

Thanks in advance

This is probably far simpler than you want but Windows 7 has built in functionality to run a VPN for you. Works fine, use it for my iPhone over public wifi if using it for an extended period. Unfortunately plenty of wifi networks block the required ports.

Change the port to 443 if possible or re-direct traffic at router level.

Are you able to provide anymore details?

On the iPhone I don't think you can change the port it attempts to connect to? Also I wouldn't have access to the public wifi router?

You are, by the sounds of it looking to create a remote access VPN to your router. A quick Google should throw up a number of examples. In this case if your looking to encrypt all of your traffic, so you're looking for a setup without split tunnelling.

Essentially yes. encrypt all my traffic on a laptop and when traffic hits by router, does a U-turn and goes out from there without encryption.

I just googled 'vpn server on Cisco 1841' and found a lot of guides. I think your router can support it as it is, though I'm not 100%.

Good luck!

There is lots of VPN material covered in the CCNA. I'm not studying it yet but i have access to CCNA material through my Cisco Academy.

Chapter 8: WAN Prototyping

8.3.1: Identifying VPN goals and requirements
8.3.3: Validate choice of VPN topology, Devices and topologies
8.3.4 Prototype VPN connectivity for remote workers
8.3.5 Validate placement of VPN server

Also covered in CBT nuggets!!

Hope that's of some use!
