VPN/routing issue

I've got a fairly complex network setup at home....and I'm having a problem with my VPN setup.

First up, I've got some cheap Thompson based router from my ISP that I can't get rid of. I have an Asus RT-AC66U. I was using the AC66U just as an access point but had endless problems with wifi. I've now switched it back to router mode.

To further complicate matters, my ISP is out of IPV4 addresses, so I'm all IPV6'ed up, and I share an IPV4 address with other customer (effectively I'm behind NAT at the ISP). Setup atm is :

Thomson Router
192.168.1.1
-> PS4 connected here

<--->
Asus AC66U
192.168.8.1
-> everything wireless on this subnet
-> NAS etc.

I'm routing the 192.168.1.x through the router port on the asus. This is all working fine, except for the VPN. You'll notice I'm an expat, I use VPN extensively. I would like to have the Asus permanently connected to my UK VPN and route all wifi traffic through it. I have setup the VPN client on the router (OpenVPN), this claims to all connect fine.

Problem I have is that while I can ping any IP/dns, name resolution works fine, ping works fine....I can't browse or connect with anything else. Really don't understand why I can ping but not do anything else :/ If I disconnect the VPN everything works fine.

do you have the ability to capture traffic on the Asus router? This would probably give some clues as to what is going on, what software do you have running on it?

If not could you do a trace route to something you'd normally browse to with the VPN connected and then disconnected and show the output?

Just running the stock Asus firmware, updated to the latest revision.

I should add that I can initiate and connect an OpenVPN connection from any wireless client and it works fine. It's just the OpenVPN connection on the router that doesn't want to play ball.
