Am looking into this for a friend as he currently runs a very small business with 2 computers in a unit. a couple of times a month he needs to access the computers to do some basic work on them or check some files. Currently he uses LogMeIn which is fine for the days where he has left the PCs turned on but most days he shuts them down after work meaning LogMeIn is no use.

The idea I have had is to change his ADSL router for one which supports VPN and then use wake-on-lan to boot the PCs and remote desktop to them. If this is possible what (cheap!) router do you guys recommend?

Something from DrayTek would probably be perfectly fine for what you want.

Easy to set up, has a variety of options for VPN endpoints and has a WOL function built in too.

Firmware can sometimes be a bit hit and miss with them IMO but for £120 for a 2820 you can't really complain too much.

-Edit-

Oh you could also just set up port forwarding and send WOL from the internet to wake the machine(s)...
