I think two things happen:
1/ the sale starts earlier as companies try to get the money before their competitors.
2/ the number of real bargains on offer is diluted / lost.
I personally think the UK should have skipped this american event, and just stuck to our boxing day sales.

Luckily tech doesn't tend to follow all trends.
I've been bitten by buying items of clothing from a retailer in "early" BF sales only for it to be dropped further on the day. The only way for me to claim the difference was to send the item back and re-order. Bonkers.

I literally thought Black Friday was yesterday...
Not normally interested but got my eye on a couple of bits so have been checking the sites.
I'm not sure if it's a sign that meta is doing well - but I recall getting sent regular discount codes , pretty much a decent regular sale on the Meta store.
Maybe it's because I'm more active now since buying the quest 3 that I'm noticing the gaps in between.
