VR Head Tracking for the PS3

You'll still be interacting with a traditional pad though. While it's clever how they implemented it, it would be a superior technology to use on the wii as you'll also have the motion sensitive controls.

I think the point is the wii has all the right things built in. Its designed around tracking IR signals and motion.

Adding a camera, building an infrared source (all wired in) would obviously work on any platform but its not going to see a game based around it. The wii actually has the opportunity to do something like this in reality.

My lecturer bought his Wii in last Wednesday, we set up the Head Tracking on his laptop.

Wasn't really that impressed, mostly due to the fact that Nintendo and the Wii's developers are too busy re-hashing old franchises and making tonnes of novelty crap, and this has a really high chance of never being used.

Also, I can't really think of many applications, a Time Crisis-esque game would be fun for about 20 minutes. (Which would be about 15 minutes longer that most Wii games I've rented) That and the fact another £50-100+ would have to be dished out for another controller/receiver and LED headset/glasses.

That was hard to watch... it was like a complete rip off of the Wii guy. I actually thought it was a joke at first! :D

Okay, forgetting how unoriginal the video was presented I really do hope these ideas are implemented into games.. SOON! :)

You're a stroppy little bugger, aren't you?

Sony Computer Entertainment America programmer Thomas Miller has pulled a Johnny Lee, throwing together a working demonstration of head tracking virtual reality on the PlayStation 3 using the PlayStation Eye...
:p

But then, how many games will make a use of it especially that PS3 comes boxed with pads?

I know this kind of stuff rarely see's light of day in actual games, but it's exciting to see that it's possible to do this stuff on all three consoles. Ok, so the Wii has IR tracking built in already but the 360 and PS3 have the potential to do the same thing within games using already available devices for each platform.

If done right I think this could add an extra dimention to the old style GCON guns you used to be able to get.

I can think of loads of ways this can be used, imagine using it in a car game, like gran turismo, moving your head to see around the blind corner? Even small things like that would work, but also if done right, can add depth

a friend got track ir.. and its really quite annoying.. id much much rather play without it.

i know its not quite the same thing.. but everytime you move your head.. something in the game moves.. you will see what i mean when you get it

I think I know what you mean, But I think that's down to calibrating the sensitivity. Wouldn't want it working exactly as you move, or it'd pick up everything lol.
