VR help/spec needed

I was going to add another wing to the right of this screen, but then figured it may be better just to add a VR headset. Mainly for games like MSFS and probably Elite next.

Quest 3 seems popular? What would I need?

What are your current PC specs?

You'll need a Quest 3
Comfy headstrap [halo] consider a battery headstrap solution.
a comfy facial interface
2m + Link cable
Lens protectors or prescription lens inserts dependin on vision.

7800X3D, 7900XTX. Would that be OK?

Does it not come with a head strap or facial interface or are there better out there?

tbh that spec should be fine but MSFS can be demanding.

the Quest does come with a headstreap and facial interface. but there are better ones out there.
as example playing a long time using the default ones can out pressure on your face becoming uncomfortable for long play sessions.
a Halo headstrap basically tries to remove the presure from the front of the face.
with the facal interface a leather one is easier to clean sweat from, as another example.

What sort of budget do you have?

Is it purely for sit down sim type games on the PC? Like Elite and MSFS?

Because if you don't ever think you will be playing games where you move around a lot or native quest 3 games, then there might be better options than the Quest 3. However, they are more expensive.

Due to space it would have to be sit down. Not fussed by budget.

Can you wear headphones with these? My DT990s for example?

Some additional thoughts:
- the Q3 is pretty much the go to unless you're happy to take the risk on something like the Pimax, which apparently has better visuals, but I've also read of too many horror stories about issues and customer support. Maybe they're anecdotal, but just be aware
- If you go the Q3 and are only going to use whilst seated and tied to a PC, don't bother with the Q3 with the extra storage. MSFS and Elite use the resources of your PC, not the headset itself
- You'll need a GPU with some grunt. The impression I get is that Nvidia does have the advantage in VR, so don't rely on benchmarks that compare performance on flat screen games. With the 50x Nvidia cards due shortly, try bagging one of those
- For the link cable, ensure that you buy one that's stated as being USB3.2 capable. Some are only USB2 or similar and can't support the bandwidth required to stream consistently to the headset
- The Q3 headset will not only take data via the link cable, but also power. That's a good thing, as it means that the battery will last for a significantly longer period of time. To provide enough power, my experience is to use a powered USB hub. I have an Anker unit that can supply up to 60w. Another benefit being that you can plug in your HOTAS and similar
- As I understand it, the standard headstrap for the Q3 is very uncomfortable. Assume you'll want to do something about it. With my Quest Pro, I bought x4 Zeitauto velcro straps and use those over the head. It changed it from being painful to more like wearing my bicycle helmet
- for headphones, my solution was a pair of Koss KSC75s. Dirt cheap over ear that make them much easier to use with a VR headset

I'll just add that the Q3 is absolutely ideal for newcomers to VR, as well as being a great headset anyway.

Well, with the Quest 3 space isn't an issue if you want to play native Quest 3 games (or even PCVR games if you set it up correctly) You can use it anywhere you have space, so you can play games like Batman, Asgard's Wrath 2, Assassins Creed in the garage or sitting room or Kitchen etc. You can play PCVR games anywhere in the house where you get a good signal from your router, as long as that router is hardwired back to the computer.

AS I said there are other options. The only two I would really suggest for you are the Pimax Crystal Light and the PSVR 2. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. For your use case, sit down sims only, the Crystal Light is by far the best option. On paper least. While the PSVR 2 still has fresnel lenses, it has OLED screens which are really nice for games like Elite.

The Pimax Crystal Light is the the best PCVR headset of the 3 suggested. However, Pimax does have quality control issues and their headsets do require a bit more faff to setup than the others listed. The quality control issues seem to lessen over the lifetime of the headsets though. So chances are you will get a good one but it's just something to be aware of.

The PSVR 2 is another great headset on paper. But it uses fresnel lenses and has a small sweet spot. The OLED screens are great but there is mura. It might not be something you notice and might not even bother you in the slightest if you do. You will have to get an adapter for your PC to use.

Quest 3. For PCVR use it connects over Wireless or USB, which means compression. Compression can lead to artifacts on the screen. Again, these might not even be noticeable to you and might not be an issue for you even if you do notice them. You can minimise these by changing settings. Also the stock strap isn't very comfortable(for most people) So you will have to get another strap. You will also have to buy a decent quality USB cable. You might want to get other quality of life upgrades, like a facial interface and prescription lenses if you wear glasses. You can wear your DT 990's with most of the headstraps.

You see the problem with recommending headsets? A lot of it depends on the person who is going to be using it. Their tolerance for things that might reduce image quality. How the headset fits on them etc. etc. Moreso than any other device, there is a lot of personal preference involved.

Is there your first VR headset? Or even the first time you have tried VR? If you have never tried a VR headset before, then it makes it a lot easier. Any of the headsets above will absolutely blow you away. Probably the easiest headset to get started off in is the Quest 3. But none of them are anything difficult to get going.

Having recently bought a PSVR2 I wouldn't recommend it. On paper it seems good but in practice the lenses are awful and the OLED screens have distracting mura (a noise pattern visible in dark scenes). The controllers track well but are really bulky.

Quest 3 is the best option that's currently supported.

My favourite headset is my Quest Pro, due to the comfort, lenses and screens, but it's now no longer sold by Meta and isn't as good for standalone as the Q3. Only worth getting if you can get a good one for a decent price.

It is in my opinion better for PCVR than the Q3 though. (I have both).
