VR worth it?

Really? How old are you? I got my first games console at 13 and my Amiga at around 15 or so.

I know the world has changed but 8 should be Lego, board games, riding your bike, football, swimming and smashing radio control cars around.
I would have loved VR aged 8, wouldnt have stopped me playing outside as well, which I did alongside playing computers. I first used a zx81 aged about 8 or 9, then had all sorts of tech from then up until the present day and had a good career in IT which was cut short by illness. At the same as being into tech throughout my late teens, 20s, and most of my 30s I was a fitness fanatic too, I got plenty of exercise to counter sitting on my backside using computers, they are not mutually exclusive

Boy does do all those things,

Mondays he gets home at 5 from after school club and spends an hour on the Xbox

Tuesday home from school at 5 then goes cub

Wednesday home from school at 5 spends an hour doing what he wants, Xbox, YouTube etc then after dinner we'll do something board games etc

Thursday home from school at 5 football training

Friday normal school time swimming

Saturday football training, playing/ family day, usually includes an hour of Xbox while waits for us to get up.

Sunday football match, usually try and do something as family pretty much same as Saturday

Mrs doesn't like him spending too much time in front of the telly, so we try and do as much as we can.. recently now the weather's changed I'm out in the garden with him or taking him over the field.

Weekends he tends to get more time to do things but we try and limit it to an extent, as you can see he doesn't really get much free time in the week with being at school for so long.

He doesn't have a TV in his room, the only person he can play online with is his uncle, and even then we still make sure we can here was being said.

Part of the reason for the gaming pc is he likes doing stop motion videos with his Lego, usually ww2 re-enactments or football penalties. He's pretty alright at it, but he also likes playing war games, he's heavily into ww1 and ww2, he likes playing war thunder (chat is off), he just finds it fascinating he loves history. He also wants to do Minecraft coding which can't really do on Xbox. Gaming pc was probably a bit of an over statement, it will be a light one with something like a 9060 or something.

There is my pc in the house, but I need that for work and if he screws it up I'm knackered so would rather he have his own, again we'd make sure it's well monitored.

We do genuinely encourage him to be active.

Edit: no idea why I felt I needed to justify my parenting credentials

VR is incredible if you have something in mind, like simracing or msfs or something.

But if you're just generally looking to buy some fun - nah, it's not too casual yet

Sniper elite is the one he wants to play.

We've told him he's to young now for a vre headset

So would you allow him to have Sniper Elite? A very violent game with awesome creative shooting, like dick/ball shot damage in graphic detail followed up with slow mo replays?
Or is that banned as well as VR? :D

Jesus that's not suitable for a kid his age, especially not in VR.

As for vr not being casual, I couldn't disagree more. Popping into vr for a quick game of beat saber, or a quick dungeon run, or an evening of mini golf etc.

He was talking about it again yesterday, and I said so what game is it you want to play, and he said sniper elite.

I didn't really think much of it and left it at that.

I popped on here and said as people had asked. I still didn't look into it.

Popped on here again and see it in my notifications now I'm glad I've continued to say no lol.

before we buy games we do make sure they are suitable. I don't necessarily go by the pegi rating, if it's an 16 + it's an instant no. If it's a 12 i'll check it out first as sometimes there is some games that's over rated for what they are imo.

Haha, you're welcome, you cant be expected to know about every game. The graphic detail/fun you can have with it, is hilarious, if you're old enough :P
Yeah, the best way is to just look at actual gameplay and judge the gore/how adult the plot/language is I guess :)

Too young.

Had a vive when my lad was about 8. He played 10mins of a racing sim, to experience, but told him he was too young to use it and he said ok. Thought it would be a right pain.

Messes with their development (vision and probably more).

Worth it?

Once you've carrier launched off the deck of a Nimitz carrier in full VR with motion and haptics there is no going back. There is no other place you can get that experience, when does a civilian and even 99.9% of trained professionals get to do that?

But if they want to run around tagging gorillas then yeah, Meta Quest has you covered there is that too I guess....

I had a go in the Tornado GR4 aircrew sim at Marham when we were servicing the ejection seats. Motion seats and a 180 degree dome. Honk bags required,
and before guerillas were invented
