VRAM - AMD/Nvidia, why does it differ?

Pretty much all ive ever said from the start and plenty of sites say something similar, so i agree with you there Rroff.

Looking at a few of the previous replies i can feel siege mentality coming on so this will definitely be my last post in this thread.

I predict that siege mentality is going to get worse as the future goes on, change is in the air. a changing of the guard.

Just keep calm and carry on :)

Changing of the guard? lol. Christ.

Now I only really like to speak for myself but I buy what's best for me at that particular moment in time. I couldn't care less if a GPU has NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Primark, Aldi, John Lewis or Harrods on it.

I wish there were more people on this forum who thought as I do on that matter.

In the same boat, what ever is the best value at giving me what I need.

Couldn't care less for this AMD vs. Nvidia with a side order of Vram 'debate' that's on going either, most arguments are picked from, quite frankly, pathetic little things that should just be ignored :)

Do AMD and Nvidia offer cards at various price ranges aimed at different crowds running different games at different resolutions? You bet.

Getting a bit fed up of every thread around here lately turning into "LOOK!!! THIS CARD IS 50p CHEAPER AND GIVES YOU 0.125fps MORE IT IS SURELY SUPERIOR!! LET ME RAM 35 CHERRY PICKED GRAPHS DOWN YOUR THROAT" Makes me not want to bother posting here anymore, almost every single decent thread gets up turned and **** on.

Deep breath, three two one and we're back in the room.

Apologies for getting into another vram debate folks/pgi. Hard not to respond though when you see your quotes getting pulled from other threads. Lets move on.

You shouldn't let it worry you. Me and Rusty ran out of VRAM and you more or less said how it happened to us was wrong and the whole internet said different. You then quoted a site that reported VRAM running out effects the way it happened to me and Rusty, and you told Almighty to read up on what happens, because he didn't understand.

Tis all good mate :)

I think LtMatt is running out of memory himself and I am not talking about VRAM.:D

Everything was about the thread at hand. The problem with making absolutist statements is they can come and bite you in the bottom :p. In my eyes it was all light-hearted but whatever.

Ha ha :D. Good banter.

I had my 5850 run out of VRAM on Stalker: Clear Sky when I was running the texture packs.... The game went to single digits and would stutter and completely lag out, it was unplayable.

Me and Rusty have experienced what happens when you run out of VRAM

You wouldn't have ran out of vram using 3GB cards though.:p

Seriously though the problem with that comment and they way you both rammed it down everyones throat is, that isn't always the case, maybe it's a Nvidia thing that a title just hits 0fps and then crashes the PC because it didn't happen that way when 6950 CrossFire ran out of vram@1080p:

Been playing around with Skyrim mods and all was good until I installed the Texture Pack Combiner, some stuttering started.

Low and behold I fired up Afterburner and was shocked to see my Vram usage sitting @3995Mb@1080p which of course is 1997Mb each gpu.

Talk about dragging it out

Surely if we experienced it, it is worth some merit and not to be told we were wrong. I would always trust a user's experience over a reviewers.

Anyway, no point to keep on and anyone who isn't bored of this thread will be a little wiser at what happens when you run out.

Still remember people keep insisting that the 7970's extra memory will have no benefit over the 2GB GTX680 and keep saying both cards will not have enough GPU grunt around the same time before lack of vram become an issue. People were happy to (tell people to) pay more money for a card with less vram believing that :D

Have we had it where a single 7970 is playable and a single 680 isn't due to VRAM?

Would prefer an answer with games than an answer with just the memory bandwidth figures.

Wouldn't have had playable frames either so a moot point really :D. Which is what was always maintained but never grasped.

It's always worth pointing out that I never stated that the 670/680 was a better option merely that at 1080p you're not going to be VRAM limited. I think that largely holds up today. Above 1080, in my findings I quite clearly recommended the cards with more bandwidth.

It's my second post in this thread and the first in relation to what happens when vram runs out.

If you read my post again, I stated that what yourself and rusty
experienced, isn't the only manifestation of running out of vram.

Surely if we experienced it, it is worth some merit and not to be told we were wrong. I would always trust a user's experience over a reviewers.

There is also zero credance to not 'believing' reviewers when you post figures from them when it suit's often enough.

That was exactly what i experienced in BF3 when i had my 6950's and i exceeded the 2gb vram limit after alt tabbing in and out several times whilst having a few different browser tabs open. Checking afterburner confirmed this. A stuttering caused by i assume, the page file filling up with textures as the 2gb limit was breached. So its definitely not a case of this is the way it happens and there is no other way as preached by our resident vram experts. As ive said all along it shows itself in many different ways depending on a lot of different factors. One such example is breaching the limit by a large amount so the game just freezes/crashes or tanks to single digit fps. However as shown by us and numerous sites this is one of many ways it willl show itself depending on different factors.

Ah dear this thread is going south now. I'm in Liverpool on business for two days before having two weeks off for Xmas. Enjoy your circle jerk lads. :

Oh and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your families. :)

Ciao for now. :)

I'm not going to bother wasting time trying to find the particular review (knowing you just going brush it off as "the problem has to be caused by something else"), but I vaguely recall seeing a review...think it was on hardocp was doing a comparison on 2560 res or something, which both the GTX780 and 7970 managed playable frame rate (think the 7970 had something like a minimum frame rate of 25-29fps), while the GTX680 2GB (or what it GTX770 2GB?) was unplayable due to shutter or something with vram usage hitting max. No doubt you would insist "it could have been driver issue" or "they messed up on setting up their bench"

Of course he would and so would his 'gang'. Its why these debates are pointless and we're all just best off agreeing to disagree and forgetting about the whole thing.

We'll be debating the same things till we're old and wrinkly, apart from Kaap whos already old and wrinkly. :p
