Is it generally considered a good or bad idea to use vsync these days?

Back when i used to play quake 2 on a crt it was a big no no as it limited your fps which in turn made certain jumps and tricks impossible. With TFTs these days is it still the case?

I have an OcUK 24" monitor and 8800GTX. Playing TF2 on full settings 1900x1200 the fps seems really high, over a hundred yet as i turn the mouse it just looks really choppy. Dont have the problem in warcraft and its not 'ghosting' the image. Tried enabling mfilter but dicnt help.

Does this sound refresh rate related? should i run at a lower res or should i be enabling vsync?

Any tips appreciated.

I find i need to use vsync. I have a lesser spec of course but tearing is solved by it. I am finding that cut scenes are not affected by driver implementation of vsync though.

Personal preference really.

Vsync on = limited FPS and sometimes minor lag when moving quickly with the mouse
Vsync off = higher FPS but tearing on screen

Personally I keep it on.

I normally never ever have it on...Only game I use it on now is Gears of War, runs like an absoloute dog otherwise if I don't enable it.

Only games I have that are affected by tearing are Crysis and GoW. Even with V-sync forced on at driver level they still suffer. I think there's a Vsync setting inclusion in the Crysis patch so I'll need to see if that works - if it ever comes.

Halflife seems particularly bad with tearing

probably because most systems can max out the game at 100fps

problems come of course when moving into big open spaces etc.. when the system may then drop to 80fps or whatever, causing the tearing.

Civ 4 without V-Sync in unplayable, something stupid like 200fps, screen wobbling like its mad out of jelly is you move horizontally.

Tearing only effects when frames are higher than 60fps correct? (or monitor refresh rate)

If so you cannot see past 60fps anyway, so why bother not having it on?

I get tearing if a game runs less then 60fps if I have vsync off. So I use vsync for all my games, infact vsync is set to always on in the ati control panel.

There is very little point turning it off. Your FPS are limited by the display you use normally 60 or 75fps for an LCD. What ever hrz you display runs at, that is the max fps you can display.

You might be getting 150+ FPS without vsync but your not seeing those FPS as unless you have a high end CRT your refrash rate is not at 150hrz. All your doing it causing tearing.

“If so you cannot see past 60fps anyway, so why bother not having it on?“
The only people who cannot see more then 60fps have extremely poor well below normal eye site.

I was talking in relation to refresh rate not eyesight. (i should have made that clearer)

You can't see anymore past the refresh rate of your display.
