VTEC kicked in y0!

I'm due a new build at the end of the year (4 year upgrade cycle ;) ) and am very tempted by something similar to this contraption. It depends on Bulldozer I suppose.

(edit: pointless dream spec: TYAN S8812WGM3NR and 4x Opteron 6174 = 48 cores of crunching goodness, oh yes, price: $5955.99)

Also, MrChops, have you got your 480 overclocked? My 470 is at 850Mhz, it's currently doing just over 16k which is a good 3k or so increase over stock. With the additional processors, a similar clock on a 480 would net even more of an increase, plus the 480s tend to clock better anyway, so I'd definitely recommend overclocking :)

No that's something i've not seriously considered, partly due to me reading how hot these things run and not wanting to fry it (it's a reference board). Although it runs at 92~93 degrees in FurMark it sits at bang on 84 while folding.

I might just give it a go and see what happens though, thanks for mentioning it.

To be honest even with the stock cooler overclocking doesn't add all that much heat if you don't overvolt. You can most likely even drop the volts a little and overclock on a lower voltage so it would run cooler. I did this with my 280, got a 50MHz overclock and dropped the voltage enough to get a 10C drop at full load which was nice. Never tried undervolting my 470 as with the Twin Frozr cooler it was cool and quiet anyway, now it''s under water so I'm aiming for the max 24/7 clock anyway.
I bet you could get a nice 1k increase at stock or lower volts :)

The thing about the pre-fermi cards is that you could drop the core clocks and up the shader clocks and keep the same sort or even lower temps (esp if you undervolted)

Unfortunately NV decided to remove that "feature" with Fermi. Doesn't mean that they arent awesome cards, they are just that it was a nice to have on the old cards for this specific application :)

Yeah, it is a shame they locked the core and shader clocks together for Fermi. At least you can still drop the memory, doesn't make much difference to heat output but it can help with stability especially in games.

Excuse the thread revival, but I couldn't help noticing you're selling up Captain. May I ask why? I was looking into opty rigs..

You certainly can ask why :)
I do game a fair bit, and the 1.8GHz Opterons just don't cut it, I was rather hoping that the more intensive games would use more threads but they don't. Just a little fed up with the low frame rates, it was a great setup for folding though, fairly cost effective and didn't use much power for the ppd.
Now that winter is approaching my room is a little chilly, hence I'm now going to a 1366 setup, which should produce roughly the same ppd, be better for gaming, and help warm my room heh.
Opteron setups are definitely worth considering, the older platforms like mine are pretty cheap to buy, and the 48 core monsters are absolute beasts.
