VVTI acceleration lag?

stalls straight away when trying to take off in 4th/5th so that seems fine

the clutch feels good, good biting point, no dramas changing into any of the gears.

anything else it could be if it is not the clutch?

It's the variable valve timing, I'd say - whilst not to the same degree, our Yaris suffers the same. On the Yaris changeover is usually around 3500RPM (though, I think changeover is variable depending on which gear you're in).

'My 1.8 Celica with a whopping 140 horsepower doesn't throw me back in my seat when I put my foot down at 30mph in 4th, what is wrong OcUK?'

And how can you not tell if your clutch is slipping?

And does it really confuse you that pulling off in 4th or 5th makes you stall?

Been driving long?

calm down buddy. The confused smilley was to signal that it points to it not being the clutch as suggested. ofcourse it doesnt confuse me.

Also, i am not expecting the car to be amazingly fast, i am just a little concerned and was asking for some impartial advice.

Ive been driving nearly 4 years, never had a clucth slip on me, therefore i don't know what it would be like. No need to be so condesending.

i won't bother in future.

I would expect it to be very flat at 30 in 4th, it is well known (I thought) that engines like that need to be revved to get anything out of them.

If the revs are shooting up but your speed isn't, it COULD be your clutch but this should be obvious to the driver - if you can't tell then get a garage to check it out. It would be a poor show if the clutch had failed at such a mileage though.

For once I'm with dirtydog. There is nothing wrong with this car, it just isn't very powerful. It makes all its power higher up the rev range so of course in 4th at 40 you are out of the power band and the engine labours before it gets into the power band, causing this delay.

To avoid this, drop 2 gears and nail it. Then it'll move (Well, as much as it ever will).

The 1ZZ 140hp engine is quite a flat torque curve. That's what the VVTI is for - to give torque across the rev range. Lift (which is what Toyota calls their VTEC clone) is something this engine doesn't have so that is irrelevant.

It should pull alright in 4th but it's not exactly the sort of car that is going to push you back in your seat in any gear.

From his description that the revs are rising without an increase in speed, it sounds like the clutch. If that is actually what is happening however

This is more the problem, I will take it into my local garage tomorrow to see if they can give me a verdict.

Don't know why some people have deemed it relevant to come into the thread and just poo poo the power of the car. I have never said i dont think it is fast enough

it is the usual suspects of course...

Anyone know if replacing the clutch on these things is a real big job in terms of labour charges or pretty standard? Can't seem to find too much info on it through the google.
