VW 2.3 V5 Engine?

Keep the Golf. With the current price premium on Diesel you wouldn't make much profit on a TDI unless you granny it everywhere.

Lack of cambelt is good. Early 150s were a tad unreliable at 100k+, but the 170 is pretty bulletproof.

Leave the scallies to wind up the boost on the 1.8T. V5 is the way to go - sounds glorious.

eh! less of that! lol

can't complain on the noise comment though! they do sound fantastic!

what sort of mileage do you get if you drive at 80+ on the motorway and hoon about a little?
(ie) realistic mileage, not that 40mpg nonsense ;)

If it's in stop/start traffic around town then I'd guess somewhere around 25mpg on average. On a motorway at 'typical' speeds ;) it'll manage between 32mpg and 34mpg. Then it gets more economical as you bring the speed down towards 55mph.

The best I ever managed was Swindon to Rugby (A420, A34, A43, A5) at 42mpg according to the trip computer, but that was creeping along at 50mph hiding in the slipstream of lorries etc. :o

The engine does sound lovely, sometimes I think about putting a louder exhaust on but tbh I think it'd just get annoying in the long run. I'm past modding these days anyway, bit of a money pit!

I too love the sound of this engine. They're so rare that I'd definitely make sure it's at least a little more noticeable to those around you :)

I've got a Toledo V5 (170). Not overly quick but sounds beautiful when revved and idles near silent - very smooth engine. As for economy though, its not great. My last few tanks have averaged around 32-33 MPG and this is driving like a saint. If I drive 'normally', I get around 28-30 MPG. This is from mostly motorway miles with some town driving.

Are you taking your MPG from the trip computer, or working it out properly yourself?

I usually go by the computer, as I worked it out ages ago and it seemed pretty close to actual figures.

However my usual 'long run' readings seem a lot better than you guys so either...

a) My trip computer lies.
b) My Michelin Energy tyres actually work and increase MPG.
c) Overinflating the tyres is increasing MPG.
d) I really do drive like a granny. :D

Hmm, I'll work out some proper MPG figures over the next week or two.

Yep, I use the computer to get these figures. Am currently averaging 33.5MPG out of my current tank, but am only halfway through it. When I say I get 32-33 MPG driving like a saint, to me this is 70-80 on motorway, not revving hard when setting off, etc. You may drive even more economically than me which is why you're getting more MPG.

My tires are inflated to recommended level, be aware that my car probably weighs a little more than yours (it's a saloon) which might make some difference.

Ok I've just done a real world test.

Left my house in Swindon, drove to Swindon centre, then out to Oxford via A420, up A34, M40, A43, M1, A1(M) etc to Durham. A trip of 281.5 miles.

I filled up before I left Swindon, and filled up just now when I arrived. I used 32.79 Litres of Super Unleaded, which equates to 7.21 Imperial Gallons according to Google.

So that gives me a real world figure of 39.04MPG. The trip computer was reset in Swindon and that's reading 39.0MPG.

I'm actually very surprised at a) how accurate the trip computer is, and b) how good my MPG was. That was basically following the flow of traffic and cruising at just a smidge over 70mph on the motorways and dual carriageways.

I'm fairly pleased now, apart from being stuck in Durham in an expensive but crap hotel and having to drive home again in the morning. :)

Hello,
I have maintenance question. My car Golf4 2.3 V5 170hp 2001 3d will have 250000km.
What part of engine ahould be checked/changed. For now what I know is lambda probe should be changed, oil (obvious) and water in cooling system.
Can you give me more info about maintenance. On what I should focus?
Car is running great. Engine is clean. No oil leaks.
Last month i drove 1350 km in 12 hours. Car was running great. 180km/h in Germany when it was possible (not faster for safety reasons). Overall consumption was by car computer 9.5l/100 km.
Looking forward to hear from you

Is keep it, they're surprisingly capable cars IME.

We got chased by someone who obviously knew the roads better than we did up in Scotland, despite being in an Elise and a DC2, the Golf held its own really well.

12 year old necrothread. ;)

Oh we're very much all still alive. You may have gathered from the forum name it's not a specialist VW forum ... and this is a 12 year old topic. Plus it's a slightly suspicious looking post.

You'd be more likely to get your queries answered by starting a new thread on a VW forum like ukmkivs, vwvortex (if they're still going) or a general place like Pistonheads.

You make a new thread champ, dont bump one thats 12 years old and on a computer forum... :p

I love that the original chap drove from Swindon to Durham and stayed overnight (presumably) just to measure his MPG.

Why do people care about digging up old threads. If it's so bad why don't they just auto lock or vanish after a week :p

Anyway, if the engine is running well it's probably best not to mess with it.
