VW golf gear box

Hey,

Got a mk3 1.4 golf and the 4th gear is gone from the 5 speed box.

I am aware that the gear box from other golfs can go in it apart from the GTi or VR6, but is there anything in particular that I need to look out for?

Or can anyone suggest anyone cheap in the Shrewsbury area that can rebuild it?

Would a 1.8 Corrado gear box work?

Car is making a grinding noise and won't go into 4th gear, been told its a gear box by the mate who has it.

seems the corrado won't work as its cable vs rod

Haven't got the number here (can get it tomorrow) but we use a place in Market Drayton to rebuild boxes. Tried ringing around the local breakers?, gonna be cheaper than a rebuild.

I've emailed furbers, need to figure out what engine code it is.

And that number would be great. Rebuild is more reliable then 2nd hand.
