Hi all

Anyone an expert on fixing window problems (rear) on a Mk6 or 7 (2013). VW golf ? Auto.

The passenger side rear (on the right ) has failed and the window is not going up or down . It sounds like electric mechanim inside is making a noise but there sounds like a crunching noise. My first thoughts was has a bit of glass broken off or something and is causing the mechanism not to work ? She has a kid so I doubt she uses the window much .

If we were able to take the doorcard off how likely would it be to gain access to the issue? Or is it a complete faff to remove.

Should be a Mk7 if 2013.

Will be the window regulator that's failed. Metal cable and plastic pullies, they're fairly prone to failure.

Door card off to access, plenty of youtube videos out there to show you how. It's not a particularly difficult job if you have some basic tools.

Here is the video..would say this is what this is ?. You can hear the crunching, does it sound like there is broken glass at the bottom.? Or is this just window regulator that you can swap after removing the first door card ? Is there another panel to remove before the first panel is removed ?.

I'll have a look on YouTube thanks

Just sounds like the gearing that drives the windows down has failed as Andy says above, pretty common on most cars really as they are plastic rather than metal, would get the door card off to make sure and then ask about a local scrap yards if they have any Golfs in (would imagine most of the VAG cars use cross over parts but could 100% say for certain)

I have seen some YouTube videos of people doing this from the outside..but looks like an older golf model

Another video shows someone doing it from.the inside but some.commemts stating they ended up breaking the glass during procedure. It sounds like you have to not let the glass drop

Just spoke guy who owns garage by me and where I get my car serviced he said approx 2 hours labour and they charge £50ph and confirmed common issue. Plus part which I assume is £40?

Is it worth going to get this by them or is this a super easy job with low risk of glass shattering everywhere?

usually the plastic clips that run in the steel rails on the bottom of the glass pane that have fractured,
happened to me one frosty morning - those were weakest link as I tried to open the window,
did need skinny hands to get into the gap behind the door panel.

I would say it depends how much your time and money is worth. If it's going to take them 2 hours - bank on it take you at least double that. You'll need to remove the door cards which are held in place by plastic clips -You will break a few unclipping the door card so so do yourself a favour and order these before you start and you can just replace any you break. I replaced a tired / intermittently working power window switch on my old seat leon and despite trying my hardest not to break the clips, broke about 4 of them.

Plus points to doing it yourself - you save the £100 of labour and do a job yourself so can you feel all manly and smug that you fixed it yourself and helped your sister out.

Negative points - will take probably twice the amount of time the garage quotes if you don't normally work on your own cars and aren't used to taking car interiors apart. You'll be sat on the drive with an tablet / phone or laptop watching a how to video cursing and swearing while you work it out and wonder why it looks so easy on youtube.

Depends what sort of situation your sister is in. If she can't afford the garage bill then sure by all means have a go at saving her the money. If however she has the money and is in a position to afford it herself - i'd just leave her to get the garage to do it.

I think its going to be a decision taken by them go down the garage route at he moment, i have spoken with my local garage who i trust and he said he would normally charge the £50 labour (2 hours approx to sort) and we just need the part, at the moment i am trying to find a decent reputible part manufacturer for this window regulator on the drivers side rear (its a Mk7 Golf TDI 2013 model) there are many different manufacturers of the part, ranging from £20 to £40, to £50 and eurocarparts list one as £127 which is quite over the top of what i was looking to pay

Anyone know which would be a decent shout to go for ? if i can source it myself then it maybe cheaper than the garage buying it and adding a markup + vat etc, they are always ok with me taking my own parts to fit on my BMW when i go if i dont do it myself.

She just wants it sorted as she has a kid in the back and the window keeps dropping, she does a lot of mway travelling,

As i dont get home till its dark and im working the next few weekends its difficult for me to find the time at the moment, i may have been able to in 2 weeks or so but i dont think its going to be able to wait

I dont mind helping find the part though and putting it through the garage i go to, i also dont want the faff of me having to learn and potentially end up breaking something if i dont get it right

if its the same as daughters partners seat ibiza he had 2014 and a 2016 we had to take pass door trims off both and replace plastic clips on the glasses. both when he tried to open the window while frozen.
apparently common ....seat dealer answer was dont use windows in the cold:(
