I'm thinking of getting a Golf for my first car, I have a budget of around 3k and would like a MK5 so im a bit restricted to something with high miles.

Is 70-80k miles a lot for a 6-7 year old 1.4/1.6 petrol?

Would a 1.4 Golf be slow? Not that im a boy racer, I just dont want to regret it and wish id have got a 1.6.. (I learnt in a Diesel)

Is this a good first car? I've also considered a MK2 Focus and peugeot 206 but prefer a Golf overall.

Heres a few ive been looking at;

Link, I think this a bargain, I might go look at it next week.

Link,

Link, Seem to get more for your money on a Focus, Is this the norm?

Thanks for any help guys! :)

I drove a 1.4 MK5 Golf for several years and it's painfully slow.

Opt for the 1.6. I think it's more fuel efficient as well (if my memory serves correctly)

Edit - Yes it is (by 1mpg) and also one tax band lower. The 1.4 really is a terrible engine.

Of course the Focus is better value, it's not a Golf.

Just look at it - its very shabby. Odd stains on the seats, etc etc. Exactly what I'd expect the bottom of the Golf market to look like.

Get more money or get something different.

im confused how my 1.2 corsa has more bhp then a 1.4 golf :/ I was about to say a 1.4 as a first car is more then enough. You tried looking at the Seat Ibiza? Has a golf engine and not as expensive

I don't know a lot about mk5 stuff but the mk4 with that size engine used the geriatric o2o generation gearbox which was made of chocolate. Worth checking imo because I would own a car with that box

My mum drives the mk5 golf 1.4, she's in her mid 50's and floors it like a boy racer to get the stupid thing to go anywhere...

Plus the interior of the mk5's and beyond are all like a space ship, no room and massive consoles sitting on your chest.

It's heavy and it's slow (1.4 at least), my '98 1.4 polo is significantly lighter (even more down on power given the age) but performs about as well.

Good first car to make you appreciate a better grown up car when you can have one, terrible first car if its the car you drive for the next 5 years and commands such a premium for an aged "cool" brand.

Then I suggest you don't post links to cars if you dont wish to read the advert first. Save you recommending insurance writeoffs :p

You had to click for more details and I didn't bother, never mind though. posted more examples.

You for one know a focus is a better choice for his budget.

All 800-1000 more :p

Motors never fails to be ultra optimistic on how little you can get a certain car for.

What the hell you on about? The first one he linked is cheap as chips, The second one he linked is £3300 and has 70k miles on the clock. He said he could stretch to £3500.

The second one I linked to is the same price and has 37k miles on it.

last one is under £3500 and has 44k miles on it. Not even checked the likes of piston heads or gumtree. Now stop being a annoying ****
