Hi all, just phoned up VW for the price of some engine oil for a 1.9 diesel ( sharan ) and it's £13.50 for 1 litre  ...... Jesus. According to the handbook I need to use VW 506 - 01 High lubricity multigrade oil ( longlife service ), £13.50 p/l this seems like daylight robbery to me, is there an alternative oil I could use ?

I dread to think how much a service will cost.

Didn't you check before you purchased the car?

Pop into halfords and look at the castrol range of oils, will say on the back if it meets the VW standard.

I just spent £73 on 10L of Silkolene 5w-40 from Opie Oils. £7.30 a litre.

Sounds about right to me from a dealer.

Can't think of many people who'd have that high on the list of things to check out about a prospective car purchase tbh.

I've got to admit that other than making sure it wasn't going to mean re-mortgaging the house I didn't look into it too much, mainly because VAG servicing confuses the hell out of me.

Your car could be on either variable servicing with longlife oil or standard 10k servicing. -OK

If it was built after xxxx it will be on variable servicing- Got ya. Unless the dealer decided to change it to standard servicing before it was sent out- WTF?

To find out you need to check the servicing code via the cars software-

But you can of course change to or from variable servicing at any point-  **** it I'll work it out later.

...and don't get me started on cambelts. That will be every 120k. Oh actually scrap that, check it at 60k and every service up until 120k. Actually scrap that make it every 60k. No hang on we'll go back to 120k or every 4 years. Hang on where the hell did the 4 years come from?! PS. the waterpump is made from edam so you need to change that too.

Cue me having a £325 bill I wasn't expecting a week after buying the car :o

Sorry- VAG rant over

we are expecting some long life oils to hit £20 a litre before the end of next year.

the VAG long life stuff varies from £12 to £16 a litre currently as there's several different specifications.

Halfords get some for £6.99 a litre. All these magnitecs and must use this oil is mumbo jumbo. Just get the weight the book recommends. Some also recommend using synth or mineral so see if it says that. Or find out what the original is.

You can tell you don't drive a car that requires this sort of oil. It's not just the weight at all - there is far more to it than that. These oils have been specifically engineered to meet the longlife service requirements and regular oils have not.

This is why, for example, Ford owners are specifically advised AGAINST using VW spec Castrol Edge 5w30 in Zetec engines even though Zetec engines require 5w30 - becuase they require a different 5w30.

Lol so wrong. I'd hate to see the inlet valves of a VW Fsi engine running on normal oil.

The point of this thread is that he IS using the recommended stuff but he seems unhappy with the price

With a VW you need to run the correct oil. Millions of pounds is spent on developing the stuff in collaberative efforts between the OEM and oil company.

This oil will easy do 20k miles, a few top ups is a lot cheaper than the 5000 mile oil changes some people seem to do as if oil is water. They rave about fully synthetic super duper stuff that has the main advantage of lasting longer yet they change it too often anyway.

fair enough, must admit I don't know anything about vag engines. If it does last 20k then that works out cheaper than using cheap oil anyway.

It's a diesel isn't it?

Yeah, I was just refering to the point of there being no need for 'mumbo jumbo' oil. Diesels like FSi engines have no fuel to wash the inlet valves clean.

506.01 is a long drain spec for all DI diesels including Pumpe Duse, luckily no DPF so normal ash.

There should be some Castrol in Halfords that meet VW 506.01 that might be a bit cheaper.

So cheap Halfords oil is 7 quid and the VW stuff is 13 quid but last twice as long and (most likely) is better for the engine, looks like good value for money then (even though it is annoying if you did not expect it.

No... Halfords oil is £7/5l, VW oil is £13/1l... so its £65/5l
