I will also add that that anyone above who has recommended the Focus Mk1 over the Golf Mk5 really needs to look at themselves, and go and test drive the two. The Mk5 Golf is clearly the better car.

But it's also clearly the considerably more expensive car - the Mk1 Focus tops out on price these days before the Mk5 Golf even starts - the fair comparison is the Mk2 Focus, if you can only afford a Mk1 Focus you cant afford a Mk5 Golf!

I have never looked at cars in this sort of class before so needed some help, although i found the fact that everyone jumped on the "lets rip it out of his question, the motoring n000b!!!oneoneone" bandwagon slightly unnecessary.

Due to pricing it looks like ill be going for the Focus. Hopefully ill find a nice 1.8/2l Zetec somewhere around me, just need the time to start looking.
