Hiya folks,

A mate has a 1.9TDI 2006 passat at VW for an intermittent non starting when warm.

Originally they changed the Fuel pump but when he went to pick it up it still didnt start

Now they reckon its the ECU. And quoted £1200.

They have told him it has to be a new one as they are a 1 time only coded to the chassis.

Can anyone confirm this.

Cheers

So the garage fitted the new pump, and didn't bother checking to see if it fixed it?

I would find a different garage, preferably an indy. No idea about the ECU though, sounds like a 'I don't have a clue' kind of diagnosis there.

If they're replacing parts like that willy nilly then I'd advise him to take it elsewhere.

Why are garages so crap, you take the car to have a problem fixed, you hand over your money and get a car that's still broken...

I'm trying to source another ECU for him.

When the problem occurs they can't get any info from the car it just locks up. And doesn't throw any codes or errors.

Check if the car qualifys to have the injectors replaced under a recall. Ring any VW garage and they check for you. I had all mine done FOC at VW Stoke and its a 2006.

Would be more likely to be the Camshaft sensor / Starter motor in that engine IIRC (assuming it's not injectors). I presume it's not showing an error list in VAGCOM is it? Seems really unlikely to be the ECU to be honest.

As above you really need to see the vagcom output. Also, at a guess, I would suggest that a used ecu could be recoded to match the car (although I don't know for sure).
