Hi,

I have a 56 plate passat as a company car, its done close to 6000 miles now and the average MPG on extra urban runs (up and down the M6) was usually between 44 and 49MPG, however since christmas eve I'm lucky if I can get it above 39MPG while driving it like Miss Daisy's chauffer !!! its been to VW who cant find any issues with it.

3 weeks ago I went to Belgium in it and it used a full take to get from cheshire to Calais then up to Belgium and back (with a full boot of wine ) and yet it cost a quarter of a tank last week to get to derby and back (90mile round trip)....

any ideas? performance seems normal, tyres seem inflated ok...

Not noisier than usual? Slight hole in the exhaust took me from about 300 miles per fill up to more like 210...

nothing, VW have apparently checked everything today, I'm wandering if it could be crappy diesel (from well known service station not supermarket)

it's been pretty windy lately and motorways are pretty exposed roads so that can affect mpg. Also temperature is a big factor, i know in the summer i can get mpg's in the mid 60's. But during winter only about 55-59mpg.

I always thought that cold air made engines perform better? In fact thats the only reason im not getting a induction kit.

Perhaps its the state of the roads or something?

And when you say 105bhp, do you mean 150? I thought they only did Passats with the 130 and 150 VAG diesel engine?

Edit: Oh god they do do a 100bhp version, that must be painful sometimes! ;) :p

For some strange reason they *do* make a 105ps version in the old 1.9 engine.

The new 2.0 engine is around 140ps.

What could be happening is that the fuel has been changed over to the winter formulation that prevents waxing. This will knock economy somewhat :-(

tyre pressures are ok, and yes it is a 105BHP.. its not too bad though... I'm not a speed demon anymore, prefer the comfort and saving (or not) in the pocket

Is it because of the change to winter diesel by the garages? I don't now too much about it but they change the formula of the diesel so it works ok down to -15C or there abouts.

There was a thread about it two weeks or so ago.

I'm almost sure it's down to the weather, don't worry about it :) My dad's 1.9TDi (130BHP) is only getting around 45MPG on those long motorway runs.

Your MPG is well low, even given the weather and the probable change of fuel formulation.

The only other thing I can think of is that you are using a bit more right foot to compensate for the low powered engine :p

I do motorway runs everyday as well, thats why I've noticed the sudden drop, I did 49 the week before christmas on *** same tank as I am on now....

I would like to say yes, but 39-40 is driving at 50mph in 5th down bank :)

I'm going to runt his tank out and re-fill with another garages diesel to see how that goes.

I was teasing aoout the leaden foot.

Now stupid as it may seem, my Passat detests moist air... damp weather like we have experienced in the last week does degrade the mileage, but not as much as cold weather :(

Just thinking, did your last fuel come from Sainsbury's?

it was fine during the cold snap we had, the fuel was from BP. I've been to Manchester today and the average for 55miles was 47.8mpg, back to normal (ish),
