VW Passat MPG issue

Have you driven one?
They certainly don't feel like only 105ps :p

agreed the torques quiet good,

I've stuck hald a tank of bio in tonight and I'll see how it goes, it did the job with my old golf, cleaned all the injectors out....and its quiets but smells of snickers :)

Ok, the problem is still here, I've tried different garage fuel but it hasnt made any difference.

Its been to VW again and they cant see any error codes and the emissions are .54 , the legal limit is 3.00

Urban I'm getting about 34 MPG which is ok, but motorway work is 39-41 mpg at a steady pace not club footing it.

what a friend has suggested is maybe the car is ok the fuel sensor is faulty and could be under reading and so working out that more fuel has been used than it has. I have 3/4 tank left which is 50 litres so I'll try and stick another 25 in as it hasa 75 litre tank and see if I can or not.

any other ideas?

I've not noticed any significant increase in consumption due to the colder weather or winter diesel on my Mondeo ST TDCi.

The new Passat is a very heavy car, and you've got the lowest powered engine which won't help. What sort of average speeds are you getting, and what sort of speeds do you cruise at on the motorway?

Trip computers vary wildly in accuracy - brim the tank, run it for a couple of hundred miles, then brim it to the same level again. Work out your consumption manually and see what it comes back as.

If the MAF was the cause of the extra fuel useage then Id expect a lot more smoke coming from your exhaust :/

Not neccessarily. MAF doesn't have to be completely shot, it might be just malfunctioning, you will get effects like those of dirty or blocked system...

New Passat has an electronic handbrake, and if the rear brakes were binding to such an extent as to reduce the MPG significantly they would be extremely hot after a long journey.

Yes and in my experience brakes that are hot from binding brake even harder

Certainly worth checking, easily done too. Simply feel the wheel and if its damn hot you know where the problem is

Handbrake sticking and not releasing the rear brake(s)

nope, got them to check this today, they jacked it up with handbreak off and the wheels turned freely... electronic hand break is a pain in snow... no handbreak turns allowed :(

anyway, the oil light came on last night, I dont think its linked but I need to top it up, I asked why it had come on with only 7000 miles from new and yet its suppose to be on a long life service, VW say it will use 1 litre every 600 miles or so and only holds 4.xx litres... sounds crap to me...

That can't be right surely

I've never owned a car that burns oil. Even the 306DT only loses about half a litre every 6000 miles and thats an engine with 166k miles on it!

It is right, it's how VAG TDI engines work.

They can go (up to) 30,000 miles between oil changes.
