Having driven a friend's Scirocco for a few days last week, my interest has been piqued as to what the VW has to offer. I loved driving it and was a bit sad to have to hand it back.

From looking around a few threads on here, it seems like the 2.0 TSI is the model that fits my criteria (I don't think my budget of £13k will stretch to an R, at least one worth having) but I'm struggling with spec. I can't work out what is standard, what is optional and what is worth having.

So far, I've narrowed my list of spec 'wants' down to the following:

Essential:

Leather + Heated + Electric Seats
Xenon headlights
Rear parking sensors
RNS / RCD 510 (I presume the only difference is Nav?)
DSG gearbox

Nice to have:

Dynamic Chassis (car I drove had this)
Front parking sensors
Reversing camera
DAB (can this be retrofitted?)
Dynaudio speakers/system
Lumbar support (or is that part of the electric seats?)

Not bothered:

Panoramic roof

What would a budget of £13k get me/what sort of prices should I be entertaining for the 'right' car?

NB. If this was a petrol model, it ticks all my boxes - anything missing from the spec that I should look for?

Would you not be better at looking towards a Golf? Could potentially get a GTi in budget?
I wouldn’t be opposed to a Golf that had a similar or better spec, but there’s something different about the Scirocco that really appeals.

Could I get more Golf for my money?

@Quinnaay - Xenons were an optional extra on all models, as far as I can tell, but an expensive one. I thought the same was true for the Dynamic Chassis, but I’m still trying to work out what’s what when it comes to the Scirocco.

Depends what you want...you can get GTi's in budget...

Not sure if it matters but with the Scirroco you get 2 seats in back, with the golf you could fit 3 people in back with a squeeze.
I know very little about Golfs, but GTi would appear to be the level I'm aiming at. 3-door models with leather (can't stand the cloth seats) seem very thin on the ground though?

And no, passenger space is not an issue.

I drove an 11-plate GTi today and while it was a nice place to be, it didnt feel a nicer place to be than the Scirocco and finding one with my spec and in 3-door seems wholly implausible. So that’s out.

When it comes to the Leon, I find it an ugly car, especially inside. A friend has just bought a 184 and I don’t like being behind the wheel - the red accents and lighting everywhere don’t do it for me. Too angry.

Apart from this chain issue with the TSI, which surely can’t be nearly as bad as is made out, I think the Scirocco just works.

What else is there for £13k that’s a nice place to sit and a pleasant experience to drive?

I’m swayed towards the Scirocco as I’ve driven one, enjoyed my time in it and like the exterior and interior. Price is what it is, for the most part. Interior quality and comfort is very important to me and the VW offerings feel right.

My impression of the Leon my friend got was that everything was red. Lighting, displays, stitching, etc. Felt like a very odd place to be when driving it in the dark and not something I’d get used to.

A nice E92 3 series coupe should be achievable with 13k? It's a proper coupe, unlike the Scirocco. Plenty of decent engine options provided you go 6 cylinders i.e. 325i/d upwards, they all have xenons, non leather is rare, Pro Nav on the newer (mostly 09 onwards) models is nice, plus RWD. My LCI 330D was difficult to fault in any way.
You make a good point there - an E92 coupe has been on my radar for a fair few months but I can never seen to find anything that fits my budget which is also worth having.

A Scirocco will most likely be a fanciful stop-gap along the way, which might scratch an itch.

Drove a Scirocco R at the weekend and really enjoyed it (BMW is out of the equation) but with the prices for a good one seeming to creep upwards of my initial budget, my eyes are now drawn to the Golf R.

What am I looking at to get me in a good Mk6? Would need to be a 3-door, which seem to be increasingly hard to find, plus I'm looking for some sensible extras. And if the car doesn't come with DAB, is that easy to retrofit?

Hence asking what I'd be looking at to get myself a good one.

For clarity, it would appear that I'm looking for an E92 that someone doesn't want to sell. The combination of age, mileage and spec appears to be extremely hard to find - plenty of E93 options, but I'd want a coupe.

On the Scirocco front, the lack of TSIs with the right spec had got me thinking about the R and last week a visitor to our office arrived in one, which seemed a happy coincidence. Fortunately they were kind enough to not only show me around the car but let me take it out for a spin, which I thoroughly enjoyed. But when I started looking at an R, the price was creeping up and up into Golf R territory.

Can I stretch the budget a bit? Yes, but I've not got bottomless pockets. £15k is doable, but past that and I'm dipping in to savings that need to stay saved.

Which is why I asked what it would take to get me in a good one - if I knew the answer simply from looking on AT, I wouldn't be asking, would I?

As to your point, what makes this a dog?

I'm back on the Scirocco R as I've found two within my budget that look very good indeed. Both are 62 plates, both have full VWSH with all the essential work already done and have all the spec I need.

On the subject of DAB, both cars come with RNS510 units... would it be a case of swapping said unit out for something that has a DAB tuner and using a stick-on DAB aerial? And if you connect an iPod/iPhone to the MDI interface, does that give you full control through the headunit/steering wheel?

And finally; warranty. Is it worth going for the VW Extended Warranty, looking elsewhere or not bothering at all?

The road trip starts in a few hours - forty miles to the first one, then fifty miles on to the second. Only difference between the two is the colour and the mileage, both have the same spec on paper and are privately owned.

Any last-minute tips on what to look out for? Both sellers seem genuine over the phone and have plenty of paperwork for me to flick through.

Well, VWFS have frustrated me today. Spoke to them three times this week to confirm that in the event of a car still having outstanding finance, I could be added as a third-party and then pay the finance off myself. Which seemed the sensible option.

Today, it was a battle to get added as a third-party, at least until the seller and myself spoke to someone who knew what they were doing, but apparently their cashiers don’t work weekends so they cannot confirm receipt of any money until 9am on Monday.

The car ticked all the boxes (was the second one in the end) but I can’t do anything until Monday. At least that gives me time to sleep on things though.
