I bought a 2002 Jetta. I gave my 2005 Jetta to my nephew. So it's the exact same car except for his is white and mine is black.

Q: You had a newer car that you gave to your nephew and you bought an older car?

That's correct. I wanted a black VW Jetta with a black interior. Believe it or not, those are really hard to find. I went to the local dealership and had them track one down for me. They had to go to Texas to get it. It fit my bicycle rack really well.

He's just won $85 million and buys a used VW Jetta?

If I'd won that sort of money the only reason I'd buy any VW would be to have a novelty barbeque. :p

In some parts of the world, some people see VW as a "prestige" marque, vastly superior to their own domestic manufacturers.

When in all honesty, VW is one of the cheapest and most mass-produced German manufacturers, akin to Ford & Vauxhall in this country.

When I was with my dad looking for his current car we went to VW dealers first, then Audi and then BMW, they are all next door to each other, each with massive car parks and fleets of cars to see in person. I sat in a showroom model of a VW Golf GTI (some sporty model with all the bells and whistles) and also a VW Jetta and Passat. First impression...VERY plastic interior, I know its made out of plastic but it feels cheap to the touch. Just doesn't seem to be getting the money's worth for such a car considering how people rave about it.

Then went to BMW and AUDI, it's in a different league !!! Especially the AUDI, I know they share the same parent company but obviously not the same interior designer coz it feels totally different inside an AUDI. Much more refine and nicer to touch, all the buttons feels better and the dash has this kind of rubbery plastic which is hard to describe. I'd get a VW for its reliability but I won't say they are prestige cars

I've owned a grand total of one VW car and my only comment is that it feels better put together than equivalent models from Ford or Vauxhall but not as plush as an Audi or BMW.

VW's are high quality prestige cars which never break down, ever.

Yeh i agree, what a NUTJOB! he could have got not once, nor twice BUT THRICE the car for that money, if he bought a skoda!

etc etc

My folks are actualy giving me their red R reg Xantia 2.0 SX estate because they've bought a green R reg Xantia 2.0 SE estate to replace it. It's replacing the red Xantia they sold me about 18 months ago (which isn't an R reg 2.0 sx, it's an L reg 1.8 LX hatch, but is also red).

At the time they were both running red Xanias I did cosider buying a red BX, but that would have been silly. Instead I bought a Vento, which was crap.

I just love the VR6 Corrado, just a pitty they just discontinued it without bringing out a 'new' model. If VW still made a Corrado, I'd probably have one.

But the 'average' VW, while being a nice reliably 'quality' car, doesnt really have the luxury feel of a BMW. But then even a BMW doesnt have the BMW feel these days. The current E60 5's dont do anything for me, compared to the interior of the E34, and E39 both of which just ooze quality.

Dunno what it is, but the materials, and the design 'shapes' just seem more 'Quality + Luxury' than the new ones.

Still if I had 85 Million dollars, I dont think I'd be buying a used VW. Would be a used E39 M5 :)

My bad,, I ment SX.

They're changing because they need an auto, personay I'd trust a french auto box about as far as I could throw it, but I didn't hear about the change till they'd commited to the new car.
