VW's, what is it about them?

lol I was just joking.

Still, are there actually any decent hatchbacks which are faster?
rs focus 0-60 5.9
st focus 0-60 6.5
audi s3 0-60 6.1
ctr 0-60 6.4
astra vxr 0-60 6.1
and at least 3 of those would blow the r32 to pieces around a track in the dry, the other 2 would probably beat it but not quite so convincingly:P

need i go on............ nothing amazingly impressive to write about the r32 in fact its rather lack lustre when you think it has a 3.2 lump up front.
hell even rover tomcats were doing this sort of 0-60 time 15 years ago :P

however i do think the sound and looks of the r32 are quite nice :)

Isnt it 6.2 secs for the RS? I am pretty sure I saw something on top gear and the 147 GTA smoked the lot of them off the line even with torque steer.

The video with the old Audi S3 1.8T with subtle mods beating/keeping-up-with the R32 on the autobahn is really impressive. I have yet further desire for an A3/S3 now! I still like the looks of the golf however :)

Any lightly remaped 1.8T can manage though, everything from an Ibiza to a Seat Toledo to an S3..

Thats the reason why I would never buy a R32 as its not easily tunable unless you spend a shed load of money on a super charger. I've driven both and to me anyway the GTI handles better however the noise from the R32 is superb and the grip of the line is superb also but its always going to be with 4wd.

Also to Malachy the Mk5 R32 Golf was clocked by Evo at 5.8 secs to 60 so its actually faster to 60 than all the cars you listed. Although I beleave the new S3 can hit 60 in the mid 5s.

ok but most (all but 1) of the cars i have quoted are fwd that difference will swing in favour of them once rolling :P
the ability of a 4wd launch brings 0-60 times down considerably
so in real world they are still faster :P

I agree on the RS Focus/Civic R would be the best track cars on the list however I was surprised to learn 2 mins ago when I looked it up that the MK5 R32 holds the fastest hot hatch lap for Evo and round the Topgear test track. New S3 is going to take that no problem though I would have thought.

Had 2 VW 1.4 litre white, Parents now have. Steering locking while on roundabouts all electrics failing, ignition saying the key is fake, the windows have plastic parts that snapped and the window wouldnt go up. the brakes failed. the interior lights all failed. I could go on but needless to say there currently in the process of replacing it with a ford.

I had a 1.8GTi Mk4 and wile lovely. the engine was using a litre of oil every 300 miles and then overheated. same issue with the electric windows and the brakes also failed. So its safe to say I no longer think golf mk4s are reliable as there made out to be. Perhaps we got 2 cars made on a friday at 4pm :p

My bmw is going the same way. all manufacturers have there quirks. eg. bmw before 2000 loved to use cheap plastic parts on vital components like water pumps ;)

i dont know how anyone can call the bulbous look-at-me-i-wanna-be-an-MPV mk5 golf "sexy". also, i found the ride in a 1.6 sport (IIRC) to be really quite unpleasant as a passenger.

They're not 'so slow' anymore then? ;)

lol

There are awful cars. There are fast cars. There are very fast cars (Aston Martin etc) and there are outrageously fast cars (911 turbo etc)

And ffs the R32 does it in 6.2, and I suspect the MK6 variant will be much quicker. Not to mention many testers have clocked it under 6 seconds. Just like the new Mini Cooper S does 0-60 in 6.5 seconds not the stated 7.1

Then what would you consider a sexy car?

And don't say Aston Martin or whatever, stay in the price range.

I personally think it looks much, much nicer than clios/meganes/puntos/polo/saxo etc etc

none of the cars in this price range are sexy. they're mundane and functional devices.

the megane <insert immense list of product spec here> F1 thing is probably about the most *right* looking of them, until you get round the back...

i suppose elises are around golf money....

But that's your opinion.

Not everyone is rich enough to own the cars you'd justify as "sexy" and some people prefer the character and soul of cheaper cars. Some people would describe a 911 turbo as mundane and functional but for me, if I won the lottery, that is the car I would get there and then.

mk4 anni is imo the best looking golf they have managed to produce.

Agree with you completely. Relatively simple bodykit and nice alloys and makes a stunning looking hatch imo. Here's one I snapped at last weekends GTI Spring Festival:

how a car the shape of a potato could ever be considered sexy, i dont know.

i suppose it's not altogether different from "chubby girls need love too" ;)
