ok i have done a bit of research and i cant get anywhere with this. i have a laptop and a destop pc both with w7 installed, i can share files using the homegroup and access each pc's files and documents that homegriup allows.

i cant acces drives or folders using windows explorer thru the network folder, i have the pcs in the same workgroup, i set folder sharing preperties to sharing, eset security is set to allow folder sharing, i have disabled password protected sharing, i have set the user account on each pc to the same name.

any suggestions what to try or check next :(

why is it so hard what was wrong with the network wizard in xp it always worked for me

I had a nightmare with this also. Try adding a "Everyone" and "Everybody" to the allowed users list in your sharing options. If sharing a hard drive rather than a folder within one, you'll need to use Advanced Sharing.

1) Get into your sharing options (either Advanced or normal)
2) Hit Share This Folder
3) Hit Permissions
4) Click Add and call it Everyone
5) Make sure it has full control.
6) You might need to reboot the machines or restart their network adapters to get it to kick in

That should work.

A restart should not be required for sharing to work.

You should also check your firewall exception to see if File and Printer Sharing has been allowed. Though this should have been set automatically when you created your first share.

I would also turn off Eset and see if the problem is resolved. The AV component is great, but Smart Security is crap. I have seen it block all sorts, even when told to allow it.

i disabled eset fully on both machines but still no joy

I've seen eset cause this issue before even when told to allow it. Had to remove it to make it work.

did disabling it not work for you why did you have to remove it

Yep, because XP didn't have advanced security. As stated check firewalls, Eset security, File sharing permissions. Can you access any shares via \\[ipaddress] ?

well this is secure cause i cant access the other machine lol, i can see my shared folders in the network folder but i cant access them. I checked file sharing permission to allow everyone but it still wont work.

can you give me some more info on how to check this please 'Can you access any shares via \\[ipaddress]'

Right from them details, you can see they both have a valid IP address.

Laptop: 192.168.0.8
PC: 192.168.0.3

Since they have a valid IP configuration

02: For this test can you turn the windows firewall off on both machines.
03: Create a folder on the both machines inside my documents call it 'share'.
04: Right click the folder called share, go to properties, security and to the permissions. (Edit, Advanced, Add > Everyone > Full control > apply)
05: Come back once you have done that.

ok i think i have done that right, windows firewall was turned off on both machines anyway, i disabled eset too, im not sur eif i was supposed to, also my document on my computer has been moved to D/my documents, i hope that does not matter to this test.

is this right this is on both machines

Right,

On the laptop can you do this.

06. On the Desktop PC > Go to windows explorer or run > type '\\192.168.0.8' > Press enter or click ok.

07. This should allow you to see a folder called 'share'. If not post a screenshot of results.

Right click the share folder > click the sharing tab > click advanced sharing > click share this folder > add a share name > click permissions > add guests > full control > apply close and test again! '\\192.168.0.8'

Now just drag and drop files.... PS any folder you want to share just repeat... I went about it the manual long way at first.... but the easy way was to just use the advanced sharing tab.... my mistake.
