right so medium or large intuous 4 im making the plunge tomorrow?

have money for either

be for illustration and graphic work

If you were just using it for photo retouching/image editing, you could get away with the Medium, or smaller.

But seeing as you're doing illo work, and can afford it, then plump for the Large.

Especially if you're using a multi-monitor setup.
 
Go for large if you have the money AND room (even the medium is bigger than an A4 pad, I have one and couldn't actually fit a large one on my desk). Awesome tablet, you will love it!
 
bigger and more money isn't always better for these things I've found, I prefer my Intuos 3 A5 Wide to some of the new bigger ones I've tried...

Its all about getting the balance right, the bigger it is, the more accurate but the more movement you need to get around ;)
