Hi All,

I am building a new HTPC soon.

I cannot decide whether it is worth waiting for the Desktop AMD Trinity cpus or not. I think they are August

I had planned to go intel and get a Celeron g530 initially, then once saved up swop it for a i3 or i5 T.

HTPC will do blu-rays some streaming and some video encoding. The encoding takes my Pentium 4 640 around an hour at the moment hence the reason for upgrading.

Any thoughts?

Thanks Legion,

Interesting, either seem quicker than my P4.

I think with the Intel I would spend more on Mobo and probably add a Silent asus 6670.

However with the amd I probably wouldn't need the gfx. Thought the new Trinity will cost more than my base Intel.

One question is upgrade ability, the next line of Haswell Intel's in 2013 require a new mobo.

However will steam roller require a new socket?

I guess it is somewhat guess work! but any help would be great!

If you went intel for your HTPC would you really be upgrading in such a short span of time?

I would stick with the g530 for probably 6 months or so, then would upgrade if I felt necessary to a I3 or I5. If I did want to upgrade, it would be mainly for wanting extra grunt for handbrake.

The higher trinity on board GPUs are not even that far off 6670 level & include specific acceleration for handbrake encoding :

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5835/testing-opencl-accelerated-handbrakex264-with-amds-trinity-apu

putting them in amongst the quad core mobile i7s for speed at handbrake.

If you can wait, I definately would wait for trinity.

I dont know if you plan any gaming but they are pretty handy for that too.

If any gaming it would only be things that require low cpu usage. I am considering not getting a next gen console and using my media pc, as the only game I play is Pro evolution soccer! however the running specs for this game are low.

Think i will wait for trinity then decide, that link was very useful ! thanks
