Wait until Intel fix IB thermal issues?

I think what Intel should have really done since the K chips are aimed specifically at the overclocking section of the market is just used better TIM in the K chips after all we pay a premium for the damn things.

.. but they are still decent clockers? You can't compare IB with SB clock for clock - they are completely different technology's. As Trigate transistors mature i'm sure they will only improve :)

I know :p but I have one of the hottest IB chips on here so I can't push past 4.5Ghz :( which although I do love. It would just be nice to be able to try going for 4.7Ghz :)

shouldnt make any difference to overclocking that clock for clock IB is faster than SB they should still clock as high as a SB chip with good temps

I doubt they will, there isn't actually anything wrong with it to be honest.

I have a feeling the chip is using a tad more power than the initial design specs intended hence its a little warmer than it should have been.

I suspect Intels next chips will have this issue figured out.

Did you see much of a gain?

about 16oC off max temps under Load from intel burn temp.

the idle didn't really change much. gaming went down by about 6-10oC

but yea when stressing was a tasty reduction in temps. seeing as i'll be using it for simulations for my work that's pretty good :D

I remember reading "should I buy a Tick or a Tock"

So "Tock" will be the better revised version of the ivybridge

Tock will be a new architecture using the same manufacturing process as ivy bridge. IB is the die shrunk and revised version of SB.

Nothing wrong with this chip tbh. Although I haven't bothered oc'ing. Turbo gives me all the clock speed I want atm.

When it starts to actually struggle, I'll push it past 4Ghz.

I don't think anyone is dissapointed with IB's performance...it is the heat they are not happy about. The CPU is trapping the heat inside like an oven, and is not being transferred out and onto the heatsink as good as people expected of a decent CPU.

Really? tri-gate and a die shrink to 22nm is a little more than a revised sandy surely?

Trigate is just a manufacturing process/tech. Apart from being a slightly larger technological leap than other process shrinks, it doesnt change its 'tickness'.
