Wait wut?

Do you have, or have you had, more than one screen connected to the pc?

Perhaps the icons have shifted off to a "2nd screen"? Or are the programs themselves actually completely gone?

Just a thought...

Dying hard drive?

See bottom of post above yours, Im 99% sure its a failing/ failed HDD.

I have 2 monitors connected, but the desktop/ start menu icons are still there, but the programs have completely gone from the install folder.

This is the most likely explanation, if you have genuinely lost programs from your E drive, and have ruled out viruses.

Virus definately ruled out, multiple scans in both normal and safe mode threw nothing up. A failed HDD is my explanation. Everything is now on my NAS and working fine.

As a few helpful people have stated, probably best to look at what your e: drive is upto HDtune will do an errorcheck, quick and extensive scanning options available. with so much stuff going missing have you noticed the amount of data on that drive going down? are there any computer illiterate people who have access to your PC who would try to remove a program by deleting the folder contents rather than uninstalling? Could your drive letters switched, thus buggering up the file paths?

Regardless, test your drives, if they are all fine reinstall windows from scratch and maybe format all your data drives if this is a viable option (data backup etc)

Thanks for that, Ive just downloaded it and just doing a health check.

I also just done a registry fixer through ccleaner, it found 4727 errors....on average I only ever get 2-3....and its all the programs/ files that were installed on my storage (E) drive.

Lets see what HDtune will throw up now.
