I thought what about doing some exercise....and how can i go about doing some. I don't want to buy a bike, and also the hills near my house are pretty steep, the idea of attempting to cycle up one isn't one i welcome.

So i thought...hmm walk to work.

Walk-it say it'll take roughly 40mins (edited out:two hours).

Was wondering if the earlier wake up would actually be worth it in terms of exercise and losing weight?

EDIT: Ok might do a 40min walk instead to start off. Thing is would a 10min jog be more beneficial?

Thanks

Upto you and weather you could handle the rest of the day feeling knackered.

2 Hours is a long walk.

My old boss used to cycle into work (60 miles each way, although he didnt used to do this every single day) saying that he was well into his biking and I think he competed in some long distance competitions.

Might be a bit much if you haven't exercised for a long time, you'd be better served finding another means of exercise to start with then when you're reasonably fit give it a go.

I walk to work and back two days a week (2 miles each way) and it tires me out by the evening.. Then again, I'm not used to it so that might be why. It's a good walk though and gets you feeling awake when you get in to work.

Tbh be realistic - if faced with a two hour walk first thing to get to work, and a two hour walk when you are knackered after a day at work, are you actually going to do it or just hop on the bus/tube/train and get home in 15 minutes? I dunno about you but that needs a helluva lot of motivation and frankly I simply wouldn't bother. :p

I'd be tempted to look into any possible 'cycle to work' scheme. A lot of places have something like this available, as it is an easy way for them to say that they encourage employees to be 'green'.

I just couldn't afford 2hrs out of my day - so I really would look at cycling as the main option. Its also a great way to exercise.

can you get the bus or drive half way and leave the car? I wouldn't want to add that much extra time too my working day.

While walking to work is a great idea for getting some excercise, I think that two hours is a bit much maybe and might be hard to keep up in the long term.
I personally just get off the tram a few stops earlier and walk the rest of my way home. Maybe you can find a compromise that will be easier to pull through?
As for your question a two hour walk every day will definetly help you stay in shape, especially if you trade in sleep for excercise.

Well a 2 hour walk is about what, 6 miles? You could cycle that in about 30-40 minutes.

Buy a bike dude, the hills will be good for you :)

You could take a bus, get off around about half way and walk the rest?

Time, journey distance and exercise balanced!

well i'd only walk in - I wouldn't walk back.

I might try a 40 min walk from a station to start me off.

Thing is would a 10min jog be more beneficial?

I don't think you can mantain a 'brisk' walk for 2 hours (total or one way?) unless you area already very fit. Don't let a steep hill put you off cycling, it will be a much more efficient use of your effort and time.

doing two 40 mins tops walks a day tires you out??

I walk home everday from work -whatever the weather (get a lift in sometimes-so I can lie in)) but in the summer I also walk to work.I really really enjoy it,gives me a chance to unwind and think-plus it keeps me fit.I have two routes the shortest is probably 30mins the longest about 50 minutes,so depending on weather or how tired I am I chop and change.

I can walk for miles but have a dodgy knee so cant jog at all ,due to having the lining removed in one knee-but I find I am so much fitter and feel better about myself since I started walking to and from work (which I have done for 5 or 6 years)-in fact I almost sulk if I dont get my daily excersize fix-if I have to drive in for whatever reason.

How far is it?

I used to walk 2 miles in and out of lectures while at uni. Sometimes I couldn't be bothered with the walk home (all uphill) and would catch a bus. But usually only if it was raining. That walk took circa 45/50 mins, 35/40 if I was late and did it in a 'brisk' fashion!

Many evenings we'd do the same walk again into town for a night out :D

After a couple of years I moved back into the same area (still at uni) and did it all by bike instead - the way in was brilliant, 12 mins downhill, wheee! The way home was admittedly really hard but awesome, it was such an achievement getting up that hill. And the time-saving was wonderful :)

Hills really aren't that bad on bikes - they seem scary but then you just get used to them. Hills are the main reason I took so long deciding to give the cycling commute to work a go - 8 miles - big whacking hill in the middle and upward slopes at both ends. I can do it now, no stopping (apart from traffic being in my way and red lights).

At the time I was also a butterball, and not very fit, so no excuses saying you'd be unused to it :P

Id say, 2 hours is preaty beastly walk. I was 30 mins walk away from my previous job and at the end of the day when it was wet the last thing i wanted to do was walk.

Push bike is the answer imo. i would cycle to my current job but its a 6mile country road and know for a fact i would be taken off my bike by some nutter
